Chicklet's mom

Hi everyone,

Chicklet was supposed to start her dose of ProZinc this AM. I was starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel when she started to eat more on Thursday and Friday (without an appetite stimulant). She vomited on Friday morning but I figured this may be due to acidity in her stomach (as she did not eat overnight on Thursday). I woke up at 3:30 AM on Friday to give her some food in hope she would not vomit the morning of her first dose of ProZinc.

Nothing went right. She turned her back again to food Friday early morning. I woke up again at 5:30 AM to do her BG, feed her, and than shoot. She started to claw at me when I started to try to test her BG. She was more aggressive than the other days. I have been testing her BG once per day to get ready for our first day of insulin. Finally, after three attempts her BG was 22.2 mmol. She than would hardly touch her food again so I hesitated to give her the shoot. I have been hounding this poor cat to eat. Chicklet was negative her ketones this AM so I am unsure why again she needs so much coaching to eat. Can this be the start of hepatic lipidosis? She was eating the last few days but not what she needs for her weight. I was able to stay away from Mirtazapine because she started eating but I am now back to square one and may have to give the pill after all I am not sure if she would be a candidate for Cyproheptadine as her liver values (ALT and ALKP) were in the high range. Is my kitty falling into hepatic lipidosis slowly as she has not been getting the amount she needs for her weight? I will have a vet tech give her an appetite stimulant if she does not eat enough tonight.

Sometimes when they don't want to eat it can be the start of pancreatitis. Have you tried offering some plain cooked chicken, tuna or unbreaded fish? Warming it JUST A LITTLE helps too, just a few seconds in the microwave, then check the temp with your fingers.

I had the Spec fPL-Felien completed for pancreatitis and her values were within normal limits. She ate warmed chicken breast once and than would not touch it again. I am willing to give her anything to keep her interested in eating. She almost seemed happy to eat on Thursday and Friday. She came downstairs to ask for her food. I was delighted!!!! I just do not understand the sudden change again. She also was negative for a UTI. I am going to try offering her different types of fish tomorrow.

Hi LM,

Sorry to hear about the feeding woes; it's such a worry. :bighug:

Is she some bit interested in food but maybe showing signs of nausea? (Symptom checker here.)

Is there any food she will eat? Even if it's high carb dry, I'd try to get her to eat something. While not ideal from a diabetes standpoint cats must eat. If you can at least keep something small in her stomach it will help prevent stomach acid build-up. (I'd be inclined to leave her with free access to food at the moment if she were mine.

Have you got any chicken breast at home? Try poaching it in (just) water and mince it up finely. Keep the broth from the poaching and see if she'll eat a bit of the minced chicken and broth.

If you believe there is an issue with stomach acid, ask your vet about giving 1/4 tablet of 10 mg famotidine. If your kitty is experiencing either nausea or stomach acid or both, no amount or type of appetite stimulant will get them eating.

Other things you can try to entice appetitie: FortiFlora (available from your vet), sprinkle food with a little grated parmesan cheese, mix with tuna water, or just offer baby food meat (without onion or garlic).

Can you syringe feed her the calories she needs? Withholding insulin on a diabetic cat can lead to more complications.
If it looks lil stomach acid, Pepcid/famotidine can help a lot.
