Hi, I'm new here, my cat Marge was diagnosed 2 months ago, tried senvelgo but unfortunately a no go. She's now started insulin. She's currently on a early renal dry food which is very high carb so I need to switch her but to something low phosphorus ideally and low carb. We are in the UK. I saw there was a thread that was from 2015 but assuming that the food choices may have changed from 11 years ago. Anyone UK based who can help? Thanks, Becky and Marge

Thank you! That's really helpful. She has a CGM on at the moment so measuring her sugars that way which at least is mercifully easy, though they are still extremely high despite the insulin unfortunately. I'll check out the Sticky and the links.
 
What insulin was Marge prescribed?

A lot of times with the CGMs we've seen that they aren't very reliable in lower numbers. They can error out and read sporadically when the cat is low. Not sure if you'd be open to it, but if she were mine, I'd use the time now while she's still in higher numbers to learn manual testing.

No need to apologise, im really grateful though it's definitely overwhelming. Sadly her sister died with undiagnosed diabetes and it was a horrible death so I really don't want to let that happen again if I can help it. I have a glucose monitor already for myself as I'm on a ketogenic diet so it's mainly just being able to get blood and not hurting her ear that I'd worry about. The lancets I have for myself I think would be too big for her. She's on Caninsulin. I wasn't offered a choice so I don't know much about the different types of insulin out there.
 
26 or 28 gauge would be good. If you get the chance to ask the vet, Lantus and Prozinc are better than Caninsulin for cats. They last longer and are less harsh. Let me know if you need something from the animal association talking about that for your vet. Or if you need some home testing videos.
 
Vets in the UK have to start with either Caninsulin or Prozinc. Prozinc being a relatively new addition to the list. It's a much better choice than Caninsulin, but since it's newer probably a lot of vets there aren's as familiar with it. Back when I started here, in Canada Canin(dog)sulin was also very popular, hence that's what we started on.
