OK, so it came to my attention that Hidey wasn't on the insulin I thought (yes big DUH moment and I'm kicking myself) so I called my vet and said I wanted prozinc. I found it online and called this morning and asked if I ordered it online if they would approve it and I was told it shouldn't be a problem. I place the order and have been waiting for approval. Then I get a call and they tell me they'd prefer lantus over prozinc. Well no I want prozinc. Ok hold on, girl gets back on the phone and says ok we can do prozinc but he has to be brought in for the day so they can do a curve with the new insulin. Hmmmmm I'm not to found to take him back but I ask ok so what am I going to have to pay you for that.....well im told the normal price for hospitalization. WHAT!!!!! I'm suppose to pay $100+ for you to start him on a low dose of insulin and test his blood every few hours like I do at home AND pay for a new insulin, the girl tells me "well ya" yupppppp the twig broke and I snapped! Ive just paid you $500+ to diagnose and regulate and now you want more! Forget it, its not happening! If I have to look for a new vet I will but I can't/ won't pay out the ear for all this. I love my fur babies and really would pay anything to make sure they're happy and healthy but I feel no need to pay for something I could do at home. Every time Ive called and they said to up the dosage they didn't make me bring him in, its basically the same thing. So after I yell about all that and say I'll find someone else she puts me on hold and says ok we'll do the prozinc as long as you understand to start at a low dose and monitor closely. I calm down a bit and apologize and explain to her that I love that they care and love how well they've taken care of my babies but its stressful to keep paying. She says its fine, blah blah blah and we hang up.

Am I wrong for not wanting to take him in to start a new insulin? I am new to this and maybe I'm over reacting and don't know what Im dealing with. I love my vet, they've all been so great and overall they have been the most caring and most thorough vet Ive ever had but $100+ to stay there all day then $100 for the insulin. Im at my stress limit. Then again it could be that me and my husband just had to pay $8,000 for a new roof that wasn't damaged to get new home owners insurance, then get hit with a debt of $10,000 from something over 20 years ago, and to top it off I just walked out of the dentist office knowing my dental work Im having done in 2 weeks will cost $500 LOL. OK so sorry for venting, tell me I'm crazy LOL

I think you were reasonable. You are testing and perfectly capable of monitoring the cycle for the new insulin.

The nice thing about using ProZinc after Vetsulin is that they are similar insulins. They are in and out, not depot. You can vary the dose. Here is the ProZinc protocol:

You might want to start posting on the PZI forum, where everyone has experience with it. And it will be valuable to check other people's spreadsheets to see how they are dosing.
