a message from a friend of mine whose cat was recently diagnosed, and me sending them to the boards here.


"Yeah we have the meter here, etc. We only have had one reading so far, we’re trying to do it once a week but we both need to be here as Jade can get a bit squirmy. Apparently Lantus is a long-acting insulin, the vet was saying that her BG would change very slowly so we didn’t need to test daily unless we were concerned by her behavior."

Not a Lantus user, but that's a little odd. I know the depot can take a few days to fill, maybe the vet just meant for the first week? No clue

Have your friend take a look at @Aleluia Grugru & Minnie SS for Minnie. Not picking on her since I know poor Minnie has been through the ringer, it's just a good example for a Lantus kitty and how the numbers change

Actually it’s the same thing my vet said to me. I no longer see her but I think it’s a common misconception with vets and Lantus. You should tell your friend that you know someone, meaning me, who was told the same thing and her cat wasn’t regulated for over 6 months. It’s not just about the risk of hypo, it’s the fact that without testing you’ll spend weeks at the incorrect dose because you’re relying on readings at the vet office only. Maybe put the fear of god in her and warn her about neuropathy. Minnie’s was so severe she could barely walk at it’s worse. Even my current vet who I actually like said to me they only change dose based on behavior

Lantus does take a few days to build up the depot but not weeks and it will be nearly impossible to regulate her cats diabetes or she’ll be overdosed in order to get there and risk many hypos

My vet suggested not to test for 2 weeks as the depot fills, but then to test every 2 hrs (if we can) to get a good chart. We started to test early anyhow.
