Uggghhhhh fat cat!

Sooo this Prozinc dose doesn't seem to be cutting it for fat cat.... I've slowly inched him up from his starting dose of 2 units of prozinc q12H to 3 units q12H and his sugar is still crazy. For example, I've decided to do a curve today, and his AMPS was 380, I then gave him 3 units, I just did his +2 and its 445.... ugh why?! It's like he's not getting insulin at all.... I do keep finding pre shoots in the 300s for the most part instead of 400s, he even had a pre shoot of 283 the other day .... maybe he just needs more, his vet is thinking he will probably end up needing 5 units twice a day, but we started low. I haven't done a curve with the PZI till now, but I've done some +6 and none have been lower than 350's uggghhh. Any advice ?!

Oh that drives me insane too when the bg actually goes up after a shot. I know that frustration!

To add to confusion, meter readings have a 20% variance.

I'm still learning. A curve is a good idea, and if you can get some late night readings that can be helpful too. How long have you been taking readings?

I'm not familiar with that food. Are we sure it is low carb?

Trying to be patient while kitty has bad numbers is excruciating to me, but it seems the only way to treat this disease for some of us is to go very slowly and not expect great results daily. I have trouble with this too. You've only been on the pzi for a week or so, with dosing changes as well. For my cat it seems to take a while to settle in to a dose. In meantime its just watch and wait.

Elizabeth, can we help you get a spreadsheet set up? It's so helpful for you and us to see the numbers graphed and color coded. The instructions are here:

If you have trouble, we have people who can help.

If he was on 4 units of Vetsulin, a 50% reduction could have been too much of a decrease to start. What were his numbers before you switched? But as Jen says, it is early days for ProZinc, and it looks like he wasn't on Vetsulin that long. Hopefully your curve today will let us see whether there is a drop or whether he stays high and flat.

I wonder along with Jen about the food - under 8% carbs?

Hi Elizabeth,
Can you put please put up a link to FatCat's SS so we can have a look? I see that he was switched to ProZinc on 09/26, so a little over a week ago. It's possible that he needs his dose changed more slowly than the one unit increase you've carried out in a week. He might be bouncing around from the dose changes. Some cats are very sensitive to this and react in unpredictable, crazy-making ways. Teasel is a perfect example.

I see that Sue was replying at the same time and has given you a different take on FatCat's situation.
