In my unabated quest for information, trends, and evidence-based practices...

How many PZI folks out there are using U100 syringes?

good morning Eric and Melville cat_pet_icon

I use u-100 for callie with the conversion chart and I get the short needles  it works out good for us cat_pet_icon dancing_cat better for more acurate dosing !

u100s here! Much easier for small dose adjustments, especially since the u40s the vet gave me only had 1u marks.

Sweet! Thanks for your replies, everyone! I'm trying to source the U100 syringes online and could use a little help. I found this post from back in January 2011 recommending the following:

U-100, 31 (or 30) Gauge, 3/10cc or 1/3ml, 5/16 inch short needle, with 1/2 unit markings syringes

Is this still current, and would you agree with the recommendation? The link to hocks.com is broken, and I don't see them listed on the affiliates page, so I was thinking about getting these. Only problem is, they don't have 1/2 unit markings. Any thoughts?

Oops! I found the GNP brand here. These have 1/2 unit markings. Still curious about your experience with the U100s and which you (and you cat!) prefers.

Hi Eric

I get callies syringes at walmart they are Relion 3/10ml cc 31 gauge 8mm (5/16") they have 1/2 unit markings and short needles, you get 100 of them for around $12.50

I live in a very small town so have to travel around 40 miles to a walmart to get them you have to ask the pharmacy for them I don't need a script for them there but at another walmart 50 miles away they said I needed a script ????? ( I'm from minnesota  )

If you need a script just ask your vet but remember to use the conversion chart and when you post on here post as you would for u-40 syringes in your dosing

I've been using the BD Insulin Syringe (Ultra-Fine Needle 0.3mL 31Gx5/16" (8mm) with 1/2 unit markings (100/sp, 500/ca) for a long time. But now I'm thinking I'm paying too much after seeing posts about Walmart?

American Diabetes Wholesale is another option to get the syringes. My local Walmart does not carry the ones with 1/2 unit markings...

Eric,
I didn't know u100's and the conversion chart were an option until I was just about done with the insulin for Bob. Otherwise, I would definitely have used them. When you get down to .25 units per shot, they sure come in handy.
Unless your kitty is long haired, the shorter the needle the better, so I would go with the 5/16ths length. (even if kitty is long haired, you can use them. Just harder to see the skin unless you wet the hair around the shot site first) As far as gauge, go with the higher number. I used 29 gauge, since that is what I had, but if you can get 31's go with that. 3/10ml is pretty much the standard, but that doesn't really come into play at the doses most cats get. More important for humans, as it determines the most units that the syringe will hold, which is important if you are shooting 30 or more units a day. Won't matter for you or anyone else here unless they have an Acro-kitty.
