Alright FDMB community - I'm having a very hard time getting anyone in a pharmacy to help me get the right kind of syringe to administer Todd's insulin (Lantus). I want to be able to dose him as little as 0.25 units - the first syringe we were prescribed held 30 units and there's just no way to break it down into quarters. What type of syringe do you use to give 0.25 units of Lantus? I need to order syringes stat. Thank you!!!! PJ and Todd

I don't use Lantus but I know it is the U100 syringes with the 1/2 marks. I got mine from Sam's Club Pharmacy.

You eyeball 0.25 and 0.75 increments on half unit marked syringes. No one sells retail syringes with quarter unit marks.

You want to get 3/10 mL, U-100, short or long needle, 30 or 31 or even 29 gauge syringes with half unit marks.

Thanks to both of you - I really appreciate it. I was having so much trouble explaining what I needed to the pharmacists and vet's office because what I was asking for DIDN'T EXIST. I thought someone had given me a better syringe to use, and thankfully last night I tested how much liquid it held and realized it was a 40 and not a 100. I seriously do not know what I would do without this message board. Thanks! PJ and Todd

Do you mean it was marked U-40 instead of U-100? For Lantus, you need U-100 syringes.

Or do you mean the volume it held was 0.4 mL and holds 40 units?

I originally had the u100's, but the doses were not half marked so I didn't know what to do or that I could even ask for half marked syringes (since Todd needs less than 1 unit). When I tried to explain it at the vet, one of the woman there gave me the u40's. Thankfully I realized it before using them! Eeks!

Same situation with me - I have half a box of U-100 syringes WITHOUT the half unit markings but when Silver came down to needing 0.25u there was no way I could manage on them. I ordered the ones I posted above and got them the next day.

Hey PJ and Todd, I'm not sure where you live but if you have Walmart's you can get U-100 3/10 syringes at a pretty good price 100count for around $13.dollars.We use a lot of syringes and cost is a big factor!! Hope this helps...JR and Charlie
