@JaxBenji
Hi Susanne since Jax had his dental and I had asked about giving gabapentin to Tyler the night before and in the morning before drop up since he gets so stressed, I just spoke to my vet
and she thinks it's a good idea.
She said to give 100 mgs at night and 100 mgs in the morning
I had asked her if that was a high dose since I have never given it and she said no
Does that seem right?
Said to put it in about a tablespoon of food.
I'm already worrying lol
So Jax is back to his normal self
Thanks Susanne :cat:

That's what my vet said to do - so I give my first dose ~12 hours before the appointment and the second dose 2 hours before the appointment. Just keep him in a room with nothing to jump on :bighug: After this time, you can see if you need to adjust dosing up or down.

Yeah she told me give him to him around 9:00 PM and then the second dose around 6:30 AM. Drop off is at 8:30. Does that sound about right?
So if I see him to messed up after the first dose I could empty some out of the second capsule for the morning dose

Is 100 mgs the dose you give?
She said that's the lowest mgs it comes in
Did Jax seem really out of it on that dose
How do they act , what does it do to them , does it make them drowsy
Sorry for all the questions
Thanks for being here for me

Yup, sounds like what my vet says to do.

So, gaba powder IS bitter. I can trick Jax into eating 100mg in a few teaspoons of food - I take a serrated paring knife and cut off the end of the capsule. With that said, I also got pilling to an okay place after Jax's dental so I've also pilled him too. Did you get any extra pills (or can you get some extra)? My vet gives extra capsules to me in the event things don't go well :joyful:

Is 100 mgs the dose you give?
Yup that was our starting dose - gaba comes in 100mg capsules unless you get a compounded pill (e.g., Wedgewood Pharmacy or your vet may carry the compounded pill - when compounded you can get 50mg or 25mg but it's pricey). After Jax's dental, they gave him gaba for pain and I didn't like giving 100mg so I unofficially made my own 50mg (and eventually 25mg) capsules by dividing up the powder for the 100mg into empty pill capsules - this worked as it was just for a week or so.

How do they act , what does it do to them , does it make them drowsy
I'd read through this article - https://fearfreepets.com/study-gabapentin-reduces-stress-cats-veterinary-visits/ - I'm sure there are others - Jax is a little drowsy and has ataxia. ECID though.

You two will do great :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:

Yes she gave me 8 capsules, first I'll try putting it in his food, I do have empty capsules if that doesn't work and will try to pill him, probably will get my fingers
chopped off my him lol
I had no problem pilling Perry

I will do the same if I don't like how the 100 mgs are affecting him, good idea

Maybe because Tyler is a fatso 17 lbs if won't mess him up to much lol
Thank you for all your help Susanne I truly appreciate it. I will also take one of my xanax to calm me down :p
Hopefully when I give it to him at night he might sleep and not bother me for food in the wee hours of the morning

Well tomorrow is D-Day lol Please say a prayer that there are no extractions, just a cleaning. You all know I'll be on here tomorrow night worrying lol
I just hope the gabapentin that I give him tonight will make him sleep because he's always bugging me for food around 2 AM , 3 AM etc.
He is just relentless with the howling.
I know if I got an auto feeder he would be scared of it, I can't even sneeze by him, he takes off running. He's a real baby!
So please wish us luck
You all know I'm a worry wart :p

I hope the gabapentin chills Tyler right out (hmmm, do they give enough of it for the CG??:joyful::bighug:) and makes him forget all about food. Sending prayers and vines for a smooth dental appointment with just a cleaning required! Butters will be waiting to smother him in wet sloppy kisses when he is out:kiss::kiss::kiss::kiss:. Word on the street is he dips away from the falls every now and then to visit his old friends in the lagoon:D.

So when Tyler gets gaba, you get Xanax :p

Do you have Gerber turkey or chicken on hand just in case? I also liked having pet wipes to wipe him down when he got home...this was more so Benji would be more accepting of him (but Benji is so judgmental that he refused to acknowledge Jax for DAYS ).

Sending lots of love and prayers :bighug: Whatever happens, having the dental done is the right thing to do :bighug: (can you tell I had to say that to myself a lot :joyful:)

Hugs mama bean. Love to Ashley and your dad too.

behave tonight, Tyler.

I never thought about the baby food, I'll definitely pick some up after I drop him off.
Thanks for reminding me
I used to have it for Perry but threw it away.
Yes I get Xanax :p :bighug:

I hope it chills him out too Lyla, or he will be locked away in a padded room :p
Thank you Kyla :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Thanks everyone , you know me I'll be testing his BG to see if it goes up which it probably will. It went up when he just went for the check up for 2 days.

I'll try not to panic :p right and just give it awhile to see if it comes back down.
Thanks again for the well wishes ♥♥:bighug::bighug::bighug:

Hi Diane. I will be thinking of you and Tyler. I hope the gabapentin does the trick and makes him sleep, relax and not beg for food. Let us know what happens tomorrow. I will be checking in to find out and make sure all goes well. Hugs to you and Ashley and Tyler!!

Hi Suzanne, well it's 1:30 AM and he's looking to eat :banghead:
Keeps pawing at my face , it's going to be a long night !
Is that a new avatar of Darcy, it's so cute.
Thanks you Suzanne ♥:bighug::bighug::bighug:

Would you believe the gaba did nothing to him, this pain in the *** is still begging for
food! What does he have a high tolerance to drugs ;)
Oh I can't wait to drop him off lol
Maybe the second dose tomorrow morning will make him sleepy.
He's getting it at 6:30 AM . It's going to be a long night listening to him meowing and pawing at my face, then when he really gets mad he'll bite me.
Don't let his cute face fool you :p

I hope you don't have too many bite marks on your face, Diane:bighug:. That second dose of gabapentin better have knocked him out!!

He's over 17 lbs., right? I have read that can happen (need a higher dose) of gabapentin for larger cats. But hopefully, the morning's dose will do the trick at the vet. I read that it takes 2-3 hours for optimal effectiveness.

He second dose did nothing at all, I haven't slept yet because of him begging for food, constant meowing. I really felt bad for him. I'm still waiting for the vet to call after she does the x-rays

Sounds like a restless night! At least he should eat his gaba this AM without fuss (paws crossed). Hang in there mama bean! Behave, Tyler :cat:
I'm waiting for the vet to call after she does the x-rays to see what's up.
I dropped him off at 8:30 and asked the receptionist to see if they started , this/was at 10:30, why do they make you drop them up so early then!
Still waiting for a call it's noon now
Since the gaba did nothing, I'm going to ask her about
buprenorphine, she what she says

Still sitting here waiting for my vet to call, it's not like her not to call.
She said she would definitely call me to let me know if he needed any extractions.
Maybe it's a good sign I didn't get a call. I'm just surprised she didn't call though.
I don't want to call again and be a pain in the ***
Now I have all these thoughts in my head that something is up

I don't want to call again and be a pain in the ***
Don't worry about this and call again. I'm sure the vet got tied up on another pet but they should give you an update :bighug:

Since the gaba did nothing, I'm going to ask her about
buprenorphine
Buprenorphine was recommended on the board to me for post-dental pain; my vet basically said to try the gaba and we just stuck with it. Some vets give bupre as the first choice for pain med.

K, now go call the vet :bighug:

@JaxBenji
I just called the receptionist she just went in and she said my vet is in the middle of
of doing him, she said the vet will keep me updated, so I'm assuming he didn't need any extractions, but that doesn't mean he won't, until she starts to clean each one, that's what I'm saying. She will definitely call me , so I'll just have to wait.
She definitely told me though if he did need any pulled she would let me know

I'm more nervous than when they had to cut me open for the C Section I had lol

Going out to buy cigarettes, and yes I know I should quit .dirty bad habit
I'm going to try the patch again. It worked for me last time.
I quit for 3 months then started again. I have to quit for Ashley's sake
