TYLER IS REFUSING TO EAT

Hi all you probably can't tell me what's wrong with him but I'll tell you what he's been doing since 5-1-20 Night Cycle

He always eats good FF Pate
Went to put it down on 5-1-20 PM and he walked away, had to follow him and put some on my finger, he licked it off and then ate on his own

In between then and now he will sometimes eat on his own or if not I have to chase him, put it on my finger and he'll lick it off and then start to eat on his own

This morning tested him, shot and went to feed and he wanted no part of it, tried different flavor
I shot at 8:45 am
Finally at 9:30 got him to eat, but still had to put it on my finger and he then started to eat on his own
He is playing, peeing, pooping, grooming himself, bothering his brother so I have no idea why he won't eat, but he will still go after his brother's K/D dry if I leave it in front of him

This cat has me worried sick, I can't help it

Most likely will take him to my vet to see what's up
My car is getting fixed today so depending on when I get it back I will try to get in tonight or definitely tomorrow

Plus some of you know his pre shots have been blue, he was as almost green all the time
I was given advice to feed him at +9 both cycles , noted on my SS when I started doing it, I think it was 4-23-20 night cycle

Well it worked for awhile then back to blue pre shots, that has me worried also
The insulin is 4 month old but don't think it's that because he will go green during the cycles
This cat will be the death of me, lol besides him his brother has stage 2 kidney disease and takes 2 different compounds for seizures, thank god he hasn't had one in about 11 months and also takes cerenia
So I worry about him also
I'll let you know when I'll take him to the vet.
Thanks for listening :bighug:

Hi Diane - nice to "meet" you! My sugar cat will go off her food sometimes, too. A few things I try before taking her in:
1. Sprinkle Fortiflora on her food - usually this gets her interested and she'll start to eat. Sometimes, I'll try a couple other treats she likes in addition and that gets the job done.
2. Try a different flavor of food (which you did already)
3. Cerenia - If she seems to be feeling poorly, hunched over, licking her lips, etc, I'll try Cerenia first to deal with nausea. We keep a small amount at home for situations like this. ETA: Cerenia is always my first choice after making trying to make her food more appealing.
4. Cypro/appetite stimulant - This is usually a last ditch effort when she really doesn't want to eat because it makes her ravenous. I start with a very small dose, almost a crumb (1/8 a pill). I don't usually like to give this without pairing with Cerenia, on the off chance that her stomach is upset and she's just hiding it. ETA: I should be more clear that 99% of the time I give an appetite stimulant it is paired with anti-nausea meds.

If none of the above works, I'll bring her to the vet. Usually the above only doesn't work when she's been sick already.

Hi there Patricia nice to meet you also
I don't think he is nauseous, not licking lips or any other symptoms, I do have cerenia because his brother has kidney disease so he gets it every day
I know what the symptoms look like because of how his brother Perry would get and Tyler shows none of those symptoms

I can get some fortiflora and try that
It's just not like him to not want to eat, I think he is a little mopey could be my imagination because he really is a big blob lol not very active like is brother

I happened to read a few of your posts about your precious Noodle, she is an adorable fluff ball, I pray she will be alright, please let me know about her
Thanks for the suggestions I appreciate it
I swear the 2 of them will be the death of me because I am such a worry wart
Be safe ok:bighug::cat:

Hi. Cats doesn’t always lick their lips when nauseous. Max never did. He just became inappetent. This could be pancreatitis. I’d definitely try cerenia or ondansetron and see if it works. When friends suggested Max was nauseous I didn’t think so either. He had his first bout when he was 12.
That's a good point, Elise. @Diane Tyler's Mom I'm going to edit my comment to be more clear, but Cerenia is always my first effort after trying a few things to make her food more appealing. I don't try an appetite stimulant unless I pair it with Cerenia/anti-nausea.

If Tyler is willing to eat off your raised finger, try elevating his food bowl 4-6 inches. An upside-down cake tin (has a slight rim on the underside to prevent the dish from sliding off) or a couple of books you are going to get rid of anyway work very well. A nauseous yet hungry cat does not want to lower his head down to eat, and eating off a raised bowl is a novelty.

Here are some things to try to get him to eat. A vet visit might still be a good idea. Sending prayers.

Do you have any parmesan cheese? If you maybe sprinkle a little of that on her food, she will perhaps eat? usually ondansetron is better for nausea than cerenia but it doesn't hurt to give her the cerenia....it can help.

Can you finger feed her....either see if she will lick food off your finger or will she let you dab some on the front of her tongue or on the roof of her mouth? Just be careful that it's only a small amount and that you don't get it down her throat.

Here's some info Jill often posts when a kitty won't eat:Here are some things you can do do entice your cat to eat:

-sometimes in order to get a cat to eat you even have to resort to dry it is more important that they eat. there are a couple low carb / grain free brands -- EVO and wellness core.

-making a buffet to give him choices
- heating food

sprinkle food with :
- forta flora -- a probiotic you can get at vets or online. is very smelly and cats love the taste of it.
- parm. cheese
- smashed crumbles of dry food
- Purebites Duck Liver -- crushed and put on as a topper.
- bonito tuna flakes
- halo chicken treats -- crumble into dust over food
- poor a little water from tuna in water over food ( I use low sodium/no sodium added as other kinds in water has veg. broth in it and I assume that means onions, which are toxic to cats-- check labels)
-powdered oregano. yep sounds weird . but some cats like it and it will entice them to eat.

other ideas of foods to offer your kitty to stim appy:
- trader joe tuna for cats
-baby food -- beechnut turkey and broth or chicken and broth. they have no onions or other additives. some babyfoods have onions . please read labels if you can't find beechnut.
- kentucky fried chicken
- deli turkey /chicken
- plain cooked ( boiled or baked ) chicken breast
-canned chicken for people (watch the label that their are no onions)
- chicken broth -- low sodium

Hi there Kel, I always raise his dish up, and this time I didn't even have to he ate it right from the floor, just now @+4.25 he follows me into the kitchen wanting to eat
I put it in the dish he walks away, so I follow him and again put it on my finger and he licks it off then proceeds to eat it from his dish and it was a good amount ofvFF Pate
Can you believe it, he even just play attacked his brother
I can't figure this out and I want to kick him in the butt lol

If he keeps this up I will take him to my vet, most likely tomorrow because my car is getting fixed today
He just wants me to worry , he knows I am a worry wart
Good to hear from you Kel
I'll keep everyone posted:bighug:

You’ve gotten lots of good suggestions here and not really knowing if he’s off his food because his tummy is upset or what, sometimes they associate a certain area in a certain dish that they’re used to being fed out of with not feeling good so sometimes it helps to feed him in a different area and use a different kind of dish that you don’t usually use even a paper plate

@carfurby

@Red & Rover (GA)

@Patricia & Noodle

@tiffmaxee

@Sonia & Leo

@Teri (Disco NoFurNo)

Would you believe @+8 Tyler comes running to me for food
I put it down and he chowed down no problem
Didn't even have to put it on my finger this time
I feel so much better, now he better not give me any trouble when it comes to PMPS tonight
Thank you all for your suggestions, this cat just gave me some more grey hairs
Why he has been fussy like this starting on 5-1-20 who knows
He just better behave
Thank you all again you are the greatest!:bighug::bighug::cat:

That’s great. Did you give him cerenia? If so I’d give it again tomorrow to play it safe. If not maybe he just felt off and is feeling better now.

@Nan & Amber (GA) Thank you Nan, I feel so much better, I just hope he does the same tonight. Every cat I have ever had I would get so worried if something wasn't right with them. I worry too much
I can tell you one thing I could never work in a vets office, I'd probably be crying all the time:bighug:

When Mimi wasn't eating in ICU during her DKA I brought her sardines and turkey slices and she went wild over it. So now I know what to do in case that happens again otherwise she is ALWAYS hungry. The minute she doesn't eat is the minute i know something is wrong. Im glad Tyler you got him to eat though! These sugar bunnies really like to keep us on our toes!

Hi Rosa they sure do keep us on our toes
I don't think Tyler would ever eat sardines or turkey slices, he never bothered me for table food. He's weird like that, but I will keep it in mind. What a precious face Mimi has

The vet at the hospital suggested sardines! I never knew she would be into them! I get the ones in spring water that are also unsalted, and sometimes give them as a treat or just to "switch it up a little bit". Tylers a handsome boy as well!

Thanks Rosa , I'll definitely remember the sardines

Well so much for that!
PMPS went to feed him and again had to finger feed him
I just don't think he's that hungry, I know he's not sick
I think I'm going to try and adjust his feeding times during the cycles
I mean since he woofed the food down today @+8 I know there is nothing wrong with him
OK enough for my rant
