Tyler & I Had A SCARE

I lost my beloved Phoebe last night; she died in my arms at home. (She had been declining for a while--not a sugar baby: hypothyroidism and stomatitis and possibly cancer).

This morning I was scheduled to start training for a new job.

I did Tyler's morning blood sugar, decided to give him .5 of Lantus, then drew up & injected 2.5. As soon as I did it, I freaked out. I opened another can of Fancy Feast Pate, dumped it in his bowl, ran to the kitchen and got the Karo syrup. Smeared some in his mouth, ran back and got the printed copy of what to do for a hypo )from here), realized I didn't give him enough Karo, smeared more in his mouth (& all over his face), & drove to the vet as fast as I could. I texted my new boss on the way, thank goodness he seems nice.

They watched him all day. His insulin was at 7:15 am, and he dropped to 60 and got sluggish around 2 pm. They gave him some glucose and he went back up to 100. I am watching him closely tonight (no more Lantus tonight!). But he should be okay. My adrenaline is almost down to normal. Almost. Thank goodness for everyone here and the recommendation somewhere to print out the hypo instructions.

I am so sorry you had to say good bye to Phoebe but so glad Tyler’s story had a happy outcome . My heart pounded as I read about the day you’ve had. Hope u are in ur jammies with ur feet up now :bighug:
 
Wow, what a horrible day. I am so sorry for your loss. My Frosty died in my arms too. :( It's so hard. but I am really glad that you and Tyler are both OK.

Hope your new job goes smoothly from here on - and let it be a good distraction! Many hugs :bighug:
 
I'm sorry it was time for your beloved Phoebe. Fly free little one :rb_icon: and land softly, happy and healthy again.

Sometimes when a kitty gets an overdose, they will be extra sensitive to insulin, so be careful for the next few days.
I'm glad your new boss is fantastic :cat:

Hugs to you. What a day you had. I am truly sorry to hear about Phoebe. I hate to hear about a family member leaving us. You did good taking such good care of Tyler.
 
I am sorry to hear you lost Phoebe. I will think of her as I light the candle next Monday night. She had hugs until the end - very sweet of you.

You did the right thing for Tyler. Through the last 3 years we have been stressed or tired different days. To avoid mistakes we do this:
- measure BG, determine dose
- write dose down on paper, with box next to it
- pull dose, double check
- apply dose
- then immediately go and make a check mark in the box

By writing down the dose it kinda cements it in our mind, and then we double check it. This works for us, but not for everyone.
 
So sorry for your loss of Phoebe.
You did great getting Tyler to the vet. I'm so glad he's ok.
Kudos to your new boss for understanding.

I think I will implement a check list for his insulin in the future, and good to know he may be more sensitive in the near future to his insulin.
 
Here is a sample of our checklist from today. We embed 2 copies on one sheet of paper. Theresa recently put the checkboxes in their own column on the right.
