Hello all,
We are two months in and have learned quite alot. The scare/fright of being diagnosed and the thoughts of being overwhelmed have slowly come to a calm. Dude has been a champ throughout this whole process. I have a few questions that I'm hoping you can help out with. I will just list my questions to not make this too long.
1# We have been on the same bottle of Vetsulin=almost two months. Seems like its starting to lose it Potency. How do you know?
2# We have about a third of the bottle left and will be needing insulin soon. Would you recommend a change (type) of insulin. Seems to us that the Vetsulin is not lasting long enough, but we are not the expert.
Any help is greatly appreciated
We held the 2.5 dosage a little long due to family in town and Mothers day.
Thank you

1. BG numbers go up and stay up.
2. Vetsulin is not recommended for cats. Per the AAHA Diabetes Management Guidelines for Dogs and Cats.
Try to get your vet to prescribe Lantas or Prozinc. Normal duration of Vetsulin in cats is only 8-10 hours.

The AAHA document is in the Health Links/FAQ’s forum. Check the Index sticky.

Hey Dude! Your momma bean is trying to get you feeling better. Hang in there! But I think you need more insulin now. So I’d recommend another dose increase to get you out of those pinks and reds BG ranges.

Just wanted to update you. After shooting off an email to our then current Vet, we have yet to hear anything from them. Made an appointment to a feline only vet which was for today. The new vet was able to get our records/test results from our old vet, THANKFULLY!! New vet basically ran a full spectrum of tests which they call the Senior Wellness Exam and Lab Work. We will get the results back sometime next week. He has gained 2.5 lbs since his diagnosis. They loved our SS and said it was great info that we could supply the numbers to her. She basically said that some cats do good on Vetsulin and some don't and by the look of Dude's numbers he falls under the category of "don't "!!!! Yeah!! She wants to wait until the labs come back and then will change the insulin. Which is fine, we still have a bit of Vetsulin left. It's just good to be on the same page as your Vet. Thanks for the all the encouragement. Will keep you updated after labs come back

Yeah! A vet that appreciates the SS and can see that Dude isn’t doing well on Vetsulin.

Do you know if this new vet knows that Prozinc and Lantus are both good insulin’s for cats?

Keeping paws crossed here that Dude’s bloodwork and lab tests come back with good results.

I did a bunch of internet vet browsing before making the appointment with them. What caught my eye was they had a section on their website dedicated to diabetes also saying in big bold letters "we do not treat your cat like a small dog". I knew this place was for us. She stated that she has had good success using Aventis and have had several cats go in complete remission. Honestly I had no clue what Aventis was. I had to look it up. But found out its Lantus if I did my homework right. We are thoroughly impressed with this cat only vet and highly recommend anyone in the same position as we were in to seek out if available in their area.

Sanofi-Adventis is the manufacturer of insulin glargine (aka Lantus). Not sure why your vet calls the insulin “adventis”.

So you’ll want to read the “Sticky” or pinned posts at the top of the Lantus/Basaglar/Levemir ISG forum, to learn more about Lantus.
