Two ears, two readings, 30 pt. difference?

Hi all,

I just tested Casey's BG and got 391. Since this was at +6 and I was hoping her BG would be going down, not up, I decided to test her again. I did the other ear and got 363 - a nearly 30 point difference inside of 5 minutes.

Is this usual? Is the meter off? Casey's had a few snacks today so that could account for the high reading I suppose, but I was surprised that there would be such a huge difference in a short period of time. Which reading should I believe? Or should I average the two?

Any thoughts? I'm using a ReliOn Ultima meter if that helps.

Thanks!

That has happened to me too, but in the lows, and I have a Bayer Ascencia Contour. I also thought it was peculiar how it could be a difference only 5 minutes apart, but since both were good low numbers, all I did was note them down both.

Those numbers are less than 10% apart - virtually the same reading. Don't worry - the meter is fine. Just check again (one ear) in an hour. She may have peaked prior to +6, and this way, you'll know if she is going down or on her way back up.

And yes, depending on the snacks, that could account for the BGs being higher.

Thanks for the info, everybody! I just took a reading again, and it's 367. I'll try to take it again in an hour and a half or so (I have to leave for a while.) Looks like she's on the way up again though.

Per FDA, meters may vary 20%, higher or lower, than a lab test. This is usualy good enough for decision making.

Rough guide for reference:
100 -> 80 - 120
200 -> 160 - 240
300 -> 240 - 360
