I guess twitter can be described as a one way IM conversation for personal users, and a news bulletin for organizations.

It would be up to you if it's a good thing to have. Almost every organization, news station, sports team, celebrity, and a few family pets have a twitter account. I use it for quick reference to news and such for organizations with websites I'd rather not go to daily. I can has cheeseburger is probably my favorite - they post the newest funny kitty pics and videos on twitter so I don't have to go through their slow loading site page by page, if I don't want to.
 
Hurray for Robin! My question exactly--where do you look at twitter? How do you get there? My only contact thus far is that icon at the top of the page saying felinediabetes on twitter, and if you are already here, I don't understand why you would go there. For someone more electronically literate, I think it is hard to understand how basic our questions are! And what is the name of the site with the kitty pictures?

Here are the steps:

1) Go to http://www.twitter.com
2) Click the "Sign Up" button
3) Enter your name (as you want it to appear to the rest of the world), a user name (account name), a password and the email address you want Twitter to use when it sends you "Tweets".
4) You'll then get to a page where you can enter the account you want to receive Tweets from. In this case, enter felinediabetes and do a search. If you want to get tweets, click the "Follow" button.

It looks like there have only been three Tweets in the last year.

Thanks, Deb. More stupid questions----I just checked the twitter sign in page, and it asks for your first and last name which it seems to say will appear on your public profile,-. Do people give their real names? I don't know just how paranoid to be with this. And the box that you check if you want to have people have access to your email---is this typically done? Do you end up with all kinds of random people emailing you?

I never put my real name on the web. One, it is way the heck too common and two, anyone who really knows me, and therefore would be interested in anything I would Tweet (if I were to actually do that), would know my user name.

Personally, I don't recommend putting your first and last out there...but that is just little old paranoid me. :)
 
So you make up a first and last name and you also make up a user name? Not being paranoid enough to begin with, my user name has usually been my real last name. But I find myself reluctant to continue doing that. (There are very few places I have signed up, but both google and aol have my real name. I have never had a problem, but this twitter thing makes me feel more exposed.

I do. Often they are the same thing. For example, here, my "user name" is Dragonnns. I only have my real name in my signature and then, the last name isn't included.
 
I'm a hold-out, does that make me an old fogey too? :lol: You all preview it and let me know if you like it!!!! My FaceBook & PayPal were hacked last month, so my paranoia level is high. I don't want to get TOO far behind the times though (I do have a cell phone, though I can't afford to text!). I keep thinking some of these things are fads and will move along, but it's starting to look like they are here to stay. :YMSIGH:
 
I'm on Twitter (www.twitter.com/Kristen_Painter) and that is my real name. I do it mostly as a promotional tool (I'm a writer), the same way I do other social media. Both of my editors, my agent, my agency and many of my writer friends are on there as well so it's a great quick way to keep in touch with them, see what's going on in my industry, etc. I find it only takes as much time as you're willing to put into it. Five minutes a day, five hours a day - whatever time you want to spend is just fine. I will say that breaking news of any variety seems to hit Twitter first.
 
I'm not really sure - someone in Florida reopened my closed F/B account, so I am thinking they must have figured out my password. Then about 2 weeks later someone used my PayPal account to order $50 worth of iTunes :roll: . Both accounts had my email account as my login and may have had the same password, so I'm thinking that's the link. Thankfully it's not a pw I used for much else, nor is my email account my login for any other financial related accounts. Anyhow, had to get new credit cards, etc., go change up my accounts, etc. Pain in the a**, but thankfully no extensive damage at least so far. And PayPal was really helpful (unlike F/B). I was hoping the PayPal investigation could give me some info on exactly how someone got in, but nope.

You can use twitter on your computer or cellphone. One does not include the other if you do not want. You can cellphone it and not internet, or internet and not cellphone it.



As for using your first and last name, it's really up to the user. Just keep in mind, names aren't important, it's the fine print that is important. People don't hack names, they hack fine print - your social, passwords, bank account numbers, your computer. Keep your anti-virus up to date, don't share sensitive information (anything used as a password reminder), and don't visit risky sites, don't store sensitive data on your computer, and you should be fine. I only use my first name on twitter, as I do here.
 
They refunded the amount (I think iTunes refunded it, but even if they hadn't, I'm pretty sure either PayPal or my credit card would have covered it). That part was easy, the harder part has just been not knowing what might be at risk or not, and what other info on me they may have. So far, nothing else bad has happened, so hopefully it's just a minor blip moment, but ya never know...
 
Michele, I know this must seem lame, but then you make up a phony last name? How do you remember? Do you use the same fake name on various sites? And how do you know what a risky site is?
 
I sometimes just use my first initial in my last name. All that is shown in twitter is my first name. I probably left the last name part blank.
 
I guess I'm a geezer too. At least technologically. I don't see the point of twitter. I don't understand who would read a perfect strangers random thoughts. Maybe to follow an organization or something....but it's kinda like blogs in my opinion- I just don't get it. I must be old!
