Hi everyone,

I was away at a convention this week and Dave had to tend to the horses, the dog and all the cats including her majesty, Miss Tuffy. Of course she had to protest the divided attention with low numbers. One night she kept Dave and I up all night long; albiet in separate locations!

She and the other kitties are doing well, we reduced her dose again. She was at 4.5 when she "moved in," and now she is getting 2.5. Not sure what to make of that.

I am sure glad to be home again. We're all looking forward to a relaxing weekend :)

just fyi, with Lantus, we make dosing decisions based upon the low point of the cycle, rather than preshots (at least most of the time.) so unless you catch a number under 50, you probably want to hold the dose the same. shooting a lower preshot number can often flatten out the cycle, sometimes to the point where the blood sugar doesn't move more than 10 points or so in the whole cycle.

sounds like your husband had his hands full - hope you enjoyed your break at the convention. and that it was fun and not all work!

Theoretically, I agree with Julie. However, Tuffy has never been a "by the books" kitty. This is the flattest I can recall seeing Tuffy's numbers. Whatever you're doing, it's agreeing with Tuffy.
 
I agree with Sienne....you all are doing a great job with Tuffy! Her SS looks super.

I hope everyone else is doing as well.
 
Hi Nada - I think Tuffy looks GREAT! I am so relieved and impressed to see her cranking out these good numbers, She and Barbara were so close that I worried about her running too high etc, being stressed etc, having high uncontrollable numbers, etc. For me, to see these lows, to see that she is not stressed, that she is doing well, is truly wonderful. KUDOS to you! I wouldn't change thing in what you are doing with and for her, It obviously is working, and she is obviously happy with you.

I am just curious Nada, besides shooting less insulin into Tuffy when she has a lower pre-shot number, did you happen to stop feeding Tuffy dry food, or kibble? Was Tuffy eating kibble up until this new SS?

I would just like to know because if so this would be the second time that removing dry kibble from a cat's diet has actually helped to lower a cat's BG numbers. If that is the case, we've seen this type of thing once before when Scooter went OTJ last month after having his dry kibble taken away from him. ;-)

We haven't changed Tuffy's diet at all. She only eats canned food: Fancy Feast, and OK, this may sound nuts, but she only gets it fresh from the can, in a dish with some water. It never gets refrigerated...we have plenty of other kitties who don't mind it chilled, so it never gets wasted. When I read the food charts posted here, I noticed that the carb %'s didn't actually match up with the numbers that Barb wrote on the cans, so the stuff I call 10% might actually be 8 or 9. We've tried to keep it simple and consistent. The only thing that has changed for Tuffy, (other than everything, obviously), is that we now shoot at 9, where Barb shot an hour earlier. (Barb gradually adjusted Tuffy's time for us the week before she brought her.) When the time changed and I wanted to back up the shoot time, Dave said he thought we should stick because she was doing so well. So we adjusted to her, and 9PM is not a fun shoot time. But Dave might be right, and Tuffy agrees with her numbers.

BTW, we are not against dry food. We keep kibble out for the other cats all the time. Even Waif, Bandit and TB have a big bowl in their room. But they get canned food twice a day too.

On a side note, the SS is really helpful, it lets you notice holes in your data that are easily missed with a pen and paper list. Thanks all for encouraging use of the tool.

You two are obviously doing something RIGHT with Tuffy to be able to bring her down to such low numbers. With so many other cats in your household, (I have 30), how do you manage to keep dry kibble away from Tuffy? Or, is it possible that Tuffy is also eating some kibble?

I personally do not like dry kibble for any of the cats that I care for but I cannot afford to feed 30 cats canned food only, even if it was only Friskies. So, at my house everyone gets one measured cup of 1/3 Kirkland kibble (Costco brannd), then for their evening meal, 14 adult cats share 6 cans of Friskies. For the cats I am fostering that are going up for adoption I give them each 1/2 can of Friskies, mainly because 1/2 of them are under one year old.

I researched the price of 'Young Again" kibble and although it seems like a pretty good product if one is determined to feed their cat dry food-- I just cannot afford to feed it to 30 cats, even if I split it half-and half. One large bag of it is $109.00, without tax and without shipping costs included. As no one is helping me cover the costs of any of the cats I foster it is just too expensive for me.
 
Well, Tuffy basically lives in my home office, so she doesn't have access to the other's food source. The dry kibble is in the laundry room (away from the dog), and when Tuffy comes out to we just close the laundry room door. So her diet is super regulated.

That said, I actually like dry food for my kitties, but we have to constantly read labels, because one of ours, a little grey tabby named Nyx, is allergic to beef, eggs, yeast and lots of other fun things, like palm, and yes, we live in Florida. Sometimes the same brand and flavor of dry food has different ingredients, so we get a little nuts reading fine print in the pet food aisle.

Tuffy seems content. She loves Dave and has my company all week long while I work. She loves looking out the window at the birds, lizards and horses. She is starting to feel adventuresome, and tries to get out and about more often, but with Barb's other kitties in the master bedroom we have to share "full house acclimation time."

It's been a challenging month, but I am glad we are all doing well. We don't have half as many cats as you Tina, I can't even imagine. But we do what we have to do.
