Tucker's Food Experiment

Fancy Feast, the one on the list! SaysTurkey and Giblets Feast Classic ( it's a pate) the listing says only 3 carbs

I had to let him eat 2Tbls of food, after test. I though for sure, I would be shooting right away.. Now I gotta retest and he's eaten!!

If he likes the Fancy Feast turkey, it's fine for him to have!!

If you have plenty of test strips and can stay up tonight to test (and have high carb food if you need it) I think you'd be fine to shoot the 1.25 but you can always shoot a reduced dose...but anytime you shoot a lower number than you've shot before, you want to make sure to get a +1 and +2 in to watch where they're going

I have a suggestion for when you're waiting to do a retest next cycle: He's aggravated because he wants to eat? Don't even give him 2 tbsps of food; just let him squawk - because being p.o'd will help his BG rise without food. Then you'll get a better number @ retest without worrying that food will help artificially inflate his pre-shot #. I can tell you honestly (because Bat's such a food fanatic & gets VERY pissy when she wants it now): Tucker really won't starve to death if he has to wait until after you're done with the pre-shot testing, even if you have to do it 3 or 4 times (been there, done that).
And he'll still love you later, too.

Forgot to add this to my last post: (Sure makes life 'interesting,' having a kitty in the house who wants to be bossy, doesn't it?;))

Yea, but all The Others get theirs. No way around that.
But I'll think on it.
My alpha male, Prince will NOT shut up. He can yowl for hours, possibly DAYS.
@Chris & China I can watch. Probably will shoot. Thank you!

RE What Chris said: Yes, as long as you can check him tonight later on, you're probably okay to shoot.
Incidentally, since you're feeding mini meals (am I right about that?), it would be helpful to know when you customarily do that in your 12-hour cycles.

Incidentally, I kind of have mixed feelings about the mini-meals approach, starting right out of the gate on ProZinc, when still trying to get a read on how kitties react to it in a 12-hr cycle. Here's why: Makes it hard to get an accurate baseline for how they process insulin when we do it that way. (It goes without saying, though, that if you're checking BG's during the cycle and your kitty's heading toward hypo-zone, you certainly MUST give some food to bring that # back within safe limits!) Until I got Bat-Bat pretty well-regulated, with a chart full of blues/greens and down to a smaller dose, I just split her daily ration into two feedings, timed right after her AMPS/ PMPS #s, then I'd shoot when she was finished eating. Since she's such a gorp, I'd pick up the dish halfway through - making her wait for a few minutes before putting it back down because she would eat SO FAST that sometimes it would come right back up again (ick!); I also added a little water to her food, which helped slow her down, too.

Please understand I'm only sharing what worked with Bat-Bat ... and I know every cat is different, and that others may disagree with my reasoning. I have to admit, too, that it tugged at my heartstrings when she'd behave like she was starving in-between meals! But as I knew darned well she really wasn't (because she was getting the full amount of food every day divided into two feedings am/pm, I just held my ground and eventually she stopped acting up so much. (Kitties can be bratty, too.)

Hi Brenda @Tucker&Me ,

Did you do a second test to check that 'spike' number?
It may well have been a spike, but sometimes you can just get a wonky meter reading.
It's worth double-checking any 'WTF?!' test results for confirmation (with the possible exception of very low test results where it can be more prudent to act to bring the blood glucose up before taking the time to re-test.) :)

Robin, I doubt that anyone will disagree with your reasoning.
By feeding just twice a day you're reducing the number of 'variables'. So it can be easier to get a picture of how the insulin is working in the cats' body.

Although the 'mini meals' approach is a popular one here (as is 'free-feeding'), not everyone goes that route. There are others here who also feed just twice a day because that works better for their kitties. So, you're not alone in that.
It really is a case of finding what works for the kitty and the caregiver.

Me? I free-feed my lot, and have even been known to keep opening tins until the little so-and-so's find something they like. My cats have me well trained......
