I also remember thinking at the time that if it were my cat I would have pulled out of the trial. @Elizabeth and Bertie - I think you are most likely right that the cat was being prescribed too much insulin.

I remember seeing a kitty here that was on the Lantus sliding scale trial. IIRC the kitty's response wasn't anything like as good as we would have expected it to be had the caregiver been able to follow TR - or even SLGS. (I remember being quite miffed about that at the time. I recognise that research has its place but it's tough seeing a cat that's not doing as well because the trial rules are getting in the way of the cat receiving potentially far superior treatment - especially when the post-Dx remission clock is ticking.)

Critter Mom, could you say more about your understanding of TR (tight regulation) and SLGS (not sure what that is). What do you do w/your cat? Thanks!

I wonder if that was the same cat that I saw... It was sliding scale with Lantus, and the cat was deliberately being taken into very low numbers to see if that would trigger remission.... The numbers kept dropping really low and then bouncing sky high. I had to watch 'through my fingers' from behind the sofa.....:nailbiting: ...I know it was done in the interests of research but.... I really struggled with that... :(
.

This appears to be inducing the Somogyi/bounce effect, which is not healthy for cats...and cat keep them in hyperglycemia for 72 hours or more...not to mention it's digesting their own tissues and keeping them insulin resistant (not to mention miserable).

Scoobydox, could you share did you get these at the Walmart Rx...date...location...and price? Thanks!
walmart pharmacy and they were about 13.00 for 100

go to the forum for the type of insulin you are using and look at the stickys at top. lantus has the slgs and tr protocol stickys

FDMB Start Low, Go Slow method - for Lantus and Levemir insulins:

Roomp-Rand Tight Regulation with long-acting insulins (Lantus, Levemir, Prozinc) - details in the attached PDF.

You can also learn a lot about the L insulins by reading the stickies at the top of the following sub-forum:

I didn't follow any particular protocol when treating Saoirse with Caninsulin (other than a cautious dosing strategy based on her data after I started home testing). When treating her with Lantus I initially followed the Roomp-Rand TR protocol but I had to modify it somewhat because I have chronic health issues which interfere with following the protocol to the letter. When Saoirse fell out of remission last year again I based my dosing strategy roughly on the R-R TR protocol but with nearly 2 years worth of data and my own continuing health issues (which have worsened over time) I have to bow to circumstance sometimes and err on the side of extra safety for Saoirse but I try to let her data guide me to make the best of things. It's not ideal; I wish I could do better by my girl. That said, Saoirse's fairly well regulated in spite of her mama's shortcomings (for which I am enormously grateful).

@scoobydoox aren't those Relion syringes for 100U insulin? Ken is looking for 40U syringes for the Prozinc. It would be necessary to use the conversion chart with 100U syringes.
They do seem to be U100 syringes. I know my local Walmart does not sell U40's; the pharmacist didn't even know they were still being made! I think they may be hard to find at a brick-and-mortar store, unless it's a vet's office. I always got mine at ADW.

I know in Canada the ProZinc U40 syringes are only available in either a pharmacy that carries pet meds or a vet's office. I think they are referred to as "veterinary" syringes so most if all retailers don't carry them.

Hello, let me introduce my foster cat Daisy and her situation: I take care of few feral cats whom I spayed/TNRed near my house. About 2 months ago someone dumped a very friendly cat on street to fed for herself. When I found her, and took her to foster; I took her immediately to a veterinarian to check for microchip and learned that she is spayed, front declaw, overweight 15 lbs and very sick; young 3-5 years old. Veterinarian started running blood works, urinalyses and urine culture. She had bad case of UTI, and later we learned she is Diabetic as well; her kidneys were very enlarge too.

Last week me and veterinarian started Daisy on Insulin. I home test her with glucometer.
I have some questions regarding Insulin Dosage I read about "tight regulations" by Dr Hodgkins. Dose anyone has links to Dr Hodgkins forum or how can I reach her?
Daisy was put on 2 units twice per day for 3 days (has keytones at 5 trace) and now she is on 3 units twice per day. Her numbers staying in 300-400. I didn't notice any change in numbers based on increasing insulin dosage. But maybe it was NOT long enough to see deference. She only started insulin last week on Thursday.

I attached her speed sheet

Antasia if you start a new post and put the type of insulin and your questions more people will see and be able to help you. Do you have the data from your home testing as well? I dont see the spreadsheet

@Anastasia Hello and welcome to FDMB. This is an older thread and the title doesn't seem to reflect your needs. If you could repost on the Health Forum HERE you will get far more responses as Scoobydoox has indicated. Look for the button that says New Thread and click it to get a new text box. You can just copy and paste your text from here into a new thread with a more personalized title. You also indicated you attached the spreadsheet but I don't see any link in your post.

In the meantime, it would be helpful if you could set up a signature. That's the smaller grey text you see at the bottom of most posts. We put information that is pertinent to our specific cats in that signature so we don't repeatedly get asked the same information and get information for our location. You can include your name, your kitty's name, date of diagnosis, any other health concerns, type of insulin, dose of insulin, type of meter you are using to home test, current diet, and your location (state/province, or just country) and anything else you feel is important to help folks give you the best assistance. The signature only allows for 3 hard returns (aka hits of the enter key to get a new line) so you can separate info using a slash or "|" to fit everything in. You can also put the link to your spreadsheet in this section so it will be viewable at any time by your helpers.

To set up your signature, go up to the upper right corner of the page and click on your user name. In the menu, select Signature. This opens up a box for you to type in your information. Just remember to scroll down and SAVE your input and you are done. :)

Great catch, ladies!
Another option is to report a post that is in the wrong place and request a moderator move it. When a mod moves a thread for any reason, a notice is sent to the OP and anyone following the thread so they know where to find it in the new location.

Just wanted to let everyone here know that my 14yo kitty is now regulated and actually has come off of insulin after 4 mos of treatment. The biggest credit I give to this miracle is 1) our diligence and research, 2) the support and education by members of this site, 3) the transition to Authority canned food from dry food, and 4) the careful and conservative use of Prozinc insulin with tight regulation. Best of luck to all those still supporting their cats' transition to insulin-free living!!

Ken, so glad to here Ginger is doing so well. Your research and diligence paid off big time and without you, Ginger would still be on the juice. Congratulations!

NEED HELP! Its been 4 months since Daisy started Lantus insulin and I still can not get her regulated! What to do? Spreadsheet is attached. She eats FF canned food only, but her symptoms are still present due to not being regulated: she pees a tone, drinks a lot and always hungry
