Hello!!
Lately I've had a tough time catching my kitty using the litterbox so I can test him for ketones. Does anyone have tips or tricks for knowing when your kitty's in the litterbox?
I was thinking maybe I could put a bell on it or something? Not sure how that would work...
Thanks! : )

Okay...just attached a collar with a bell to the litterbox. Sushi had a fit! He kept biting the bell...I think he thinks it's a toy. I managed to get him to stop; we'll see how long this lasts...

What i did recently when Smokie went out of remission and had to have
insulin again.
I put that litter box where i could see it most of the time and i was able to
see her go into it.
This was the best thing i ever did. I was in terrible pain and could
hardly walk at that time and this way i didn't have to follow her around.
She didn't mind me moving it all. It wasn't attractive but it worked for me.
After the crisis was over i moved it back to her bedroom.

I got a smart cat box for Weezer. It's a double decker sort of arrangement. The top deck (the litter box) has slots in it and the urine passes through to a collection tray below. The litter is non-absorbent safflower seeds. I love it! It sure makes testing easy. And I can weigh the urine to track output. I can't say Weezer shares my enthusiasm for it, but she's using it. If you have a kitty inclined to think outside the box it probably wouldn't be accepted, but it's working for us.

You can also replace the litter with aquarium gravel, that way the urine pools in the bottom of the box.

I put the litterbox in my bathroom so that I can close the door for a period of time and then when I'm around I'll open the door and she typically will go in right away or soon after and I can test her urine easily.

I have the Breeze, which is similar to the smart cat box, but you can get it at pretty much any pet store or big box store. It is super easy for testing urine because it has a tray that collects the urine (you just remove the pad when you want to get a test), and the pellets are pretty noisy when scratched so I know when he's just gone.

Here's their web site: http://www.breezeforcats.com/. They're really affordable. I love mine because it's so clean, with no dust, and there's such a small amount of waste to be disposed. I would only caution that this not the right box if your cat has frequent runny stools. Diarrhea is a pain to clean up with this box.
