Hello we have a mixed up day yesterday. Our vet said don`t change anything but everyone else is saying we are giving too high amount of insulin. I know nothing about this but now I am worried about Trey.. Yesterday Trey started out with 324BG at 7:00am Sat.morning. (3 units) was given. Tested last evening at 7:pm and he was 120BG so we did not give insulin. Tested at 10:00pm and he is 150BG still did not give insulin. Sunday morning he is 340BG.gave (3 units). Why is our vet saying to give him 3 units no matter what as long as he don`t go below (18) Canada it is below (1 ) he will be ok. Is 4-5 is really good or perfect . Anyway I do not want to cause him more stress so what the heck do I do??????????He is eating very good pee is not as much and has a bit of water but not too much. He is doing so much better no dry food at all . Thanks Kath & Trey

first of all, it is NOT ok for Trey to go down to 1 (18). When they start getting into the 30's (around 2 Canadian) is getting too low and they need to be brought up from there. 4-5 is good if it's at the low point in his cycle (around the middle of the cycle). If it's shot time, then eventually you'll be able to shoot at those numbers, but at the beginning you really shouldn't be.

second, what are you feeding Trey? Food can make a big difference in what numbers are ok and what numbers are not ok.

third, in my opinion if a dose is leaving Trey with numbers you're uncomfortable shooting, then the dose needs to be lowered so you can shoot every 12 hours. We do recommend starting at a lower dose. If you're uncomfortable with going against the vet, what if you just told the vet you're too scared to give that much insulin and would rather back off a little and work up to that dose?

Either that, or if you want to keep the 3 unit dose, then you really need to step up the testing. You need to get at least one test every night before bed. Most cats get lower numbers at night than during the day, and the 300's you're seeing in the mornings could be bounces because he is going low at night, then bouncing back up by morning. You don't want him going low and you not knowing about it.

Hey Kath,
I have a visual for you that makes me think of what you are doing with the high dose of 3units.

OK put a funnel into a jar and start pouring water from a tap into the funnel so fast that it can't get down the funnel neck and into the jar without overflowing. So you have to turn off the tap, stop pouring water into the funnel to let some of the water drain down into the jar. When the funnel is empty, you turn on the tap, funnel overflows, you turn off the tap. And so on.

You have the tap on full blast and it's just too much. That 3 units is like a full blast tap.
All I am thinking is to turn down the tap a bit so that you don't have to turn off the tap. That off and on is too hard on Trey. He's getting 300s and then dropping to 100s and then back up to 300s and back down to 100s.
You are aiming to keep Trey at a fairly steady level, not a rollercoaster of BG.
|You want that tap of insulin to be a nice slow steady flow into Trey.
Up to you what you want to do, but it may be a good idea to try a lower dose, even for just a couple days to see what a difference it makes.
