My mom and I usually travel a couple of times a year together, being gone a week at a time. While Poopy hasn't always been the best traveler (could be because it was always to the vet - yuck!), I could start taking him on smaller trips now to get him used to it if you think it's doable for the longer trips.

Or would it be better to kennel him? (Just that thought sends shivers through me. Poor Poopy!)

There is no way honey will take over care duties.
 
I've had good luck traveling with kitties before. The only issue I can foresee would be potty breaks for the kitty.
Boarding is doable, but you might enjoy your trip more and worry less if you can bring you're baby with you.
 
I'm worried about this too. At Christmas my father in law watched him but that was before I was doing home testing. I don't know how to trust someone to test him and give him the right dose.
 
I would ck into someone coming to the home to test and shoot ~ vet tech??? vrs. taking my girl anywhere... she hates to travel and dont do well in strange places... I would have to get her used to the 'sitter' long before I left tho as it is just me and the 3 girls here so they are not to hip to strangers in the home..

Just an idea

Basically, I think I am stuck. Even tho Bean is in remission, I have civvie Slappy that now needs thyroid meds everyday! ;-)
 
I think it will be a case of ECID. I know my cat Harry wouldn't go for it cause he does not like riding in the car at all. My neighbor has a cat and they spend 1/2 their time in MA and 1/2 in FL - they drive down in 2-3 days and they let their cat loose in the car and set up a litterbox in the carrier and put out food and water also. She has no problems at all and seems to enjoy the drive. Starting with short trips sounds like a good plan, maybe Poopy will come to like it :smile:

We have quite a few folks on here that travel with their sugarcats, some even take their babies camping with them. :-D I think it really depends on the kitty and the bean. Of course since I have 13 cats and a 95lb drooler I can't travel with mine even if I didn't have a couple diabetics... :lol:

You might try a petsitter. Lots, like myself, are experienced in treating diabetic kitties.
Looks like you're in Kansas City, Kansas. If so try KC Critter sitters. I've had good luck with them!
 
My mom did the smaller-trips training with her (civvie) cats, and it worked like a charm. I have to trick mine to go into their carriers, and one or both of them will cry for about a half hour, each time we visit my parents (4.5 hour drive). But hers get in their boxes on request, and don't make a peep the whole way! She would take them to the pharmacy drive-through, or the cleaners, so they'd know that not every trip is to the vet.
I'm probably going to take mine again in a few weeks, I'm looking into insulin coolers now.

I'll be looking into the options as well as giving Poopy some rides around town. Mom is all for him traveling with us, and has a travel kennel (larger than a pet carrier) with all the travel jazz. Looks like I ought to take him on a few mini trips with it to see how he does since his short vet trips were always in halter and leash.

I just want to do what is best for Poopy, either traveling with his momma bean or being cared for by others while momma bean is gone. This may sound silly, but I hate the thought of leaving him...even for a week.
 
I would think traveling with Momma Bean would be the best for both of you. Just get him use to traveling so he doesn't think he is going to the vet's everytime he sees a carrier. Long ago I had a civie that travelled with me everywhere. I started training him by taking him on short runs to the bank drive-thru, fast food runs (which he loved because he would get bites of mom's burger). etc. He even went camping with me.

If Poopy already does well on a harness & leash then he should be no problem to travel with. Right now I'm training Musette to travel by taking her on short trips to visit family and friends in town. While I can't travel with the whole herd, should I ever need to be away from home for extended period of time, then I want Musette comfortable enough to come with me. The rest of the herd I would happily have a friend stop by and feed, clean boxes or let the drooler outside to potty...But where Musette is insulin dependent I want her with me. I know I could find a pet sitter that could test her and give shots, but for my own peace of mind I want my hand on that syringe.

I've traveled with the furkids several times by car / plane, twice cross-country. It's a lot of shlepping like with a baby :smile: but other than that it's not too bad. I bought disposable kitty litter pans for the plane. They're smaller than usual and already have litter in them. you just toss when done. I gave her a shot on my lap, the plane wasn't steady enough to test tho. I took the litter pans and cats one at a time to the tiny little bathroom (that was fun) while the other stayed with my hubby.

The car was the hardest part because Racci is afraid of cars and cries but other than that they did fine in the plane and visiting family and friends and their furkids. I just made sure I brought their favorite dishes, mats to sleep on and turbo scratchers and bought one for the resident cat too, brought food, litter, pans, etc. Lucky I did, also because they didn't carry the same brands in the stores. BTW, you pay for their tickets so they are entitled to a suitcase and that's what i did. lol. I asked first of course.

It really depends on how adaptable your furkids are and majorly important is your patience and being prepared.
