Transdermal mirtazapine (Mirtaz) - Anyone try this?

It's been a super frustrating two months with Mishka diagnosed with pancreatitis. For awhile I was managing to get him to eat, but the last week has been so difficult. He'll eat a food one day, and the next day refuses it. I know it is because he is nauseated. He's on Zofran and Cerenia, but they don't seem to be helping. Also taking Buprenex for pain. I read that the transdermal mirtazapine was recently approved and is OK for cats with CKD and it has both antinausea and appetite stimulant properties. Anyway try this yet?? Thanks :)
 
We've had a few people use the transdermal …..more often they use the oral Mirtazapine though.

The only problem I have with mirtazapine is that it can cause some cats to act pretty strange...a lot of us call it "Meowzapine" because it seems to make a lot of cats VERY vocal. It can also only be given every 2-3 days, where cyproheptadine can be given twice a day so it's a little more flexible.

Thanks Chris, but I thought cyproheptadine probably wasn't an option because according to Tanya's Kidney website, there is a risk that if taken with Amlodipine (for high blood pressure) blood pressure may drop too far. Just want him to eat :)

If it says there's a risk, then it's probably best to stick with the mirtz.

It would also be helpful if you'd add any other health problems (like CKD) and meds Mishka is taking to your signature
 
I have used both but not the trans. I have been told the trans is iffy as to how much is absorbed but if it is impossible it is better than nothing.

The inabu sticks from chewy are a good way to mask the taste crush it really good between spoons and mix in a teaspoon of a flavor that appeals (mine love the salmon ) I give them the rest of the tube after I know they ate the mirtz.
I prefer cypro but he does fine on mirtz just ,ore of a snuggle boy :)

Thanks tiffmaxee -- vet wasn't aware of the new transdermal (Mirataz) and I was at a loss and tired and frustrated. Now Mishka is starting a short course of prednilosone (sp?). So today was first day and BGs in the 200s. Gotta start all over again with the BG monitoring, etc. But, on a positive note he does seem to feel better and definitely ate MUCH better. How I hate this pancreatitis, CKD, and diabetes.... Wonder how high I can except his BG to go on the pred???? And gotta go to work tomorrow...I keep telling myself to breath, but it's hard.

Thanks for the info. What's the carb content on the inabu? May be a better way to give him the bitter ondasetron.
 
I use size 3 and 4. I’ve used 5’s too but not worth the extra expense. I’d never use size 1 or 2 as they are way too big. The smaller the number the larger the capsule so size 5 is the smallest.
 
I don't know about the taste of pred but if you were to switch to budesonide there is no taste and easy to mix with the inabu sticks-
I have never tried the trans.... the pharmacist told me that its effect depends on how the individual cat absorbs and finding the right dose.
Rico actually does better with at least a size 3 capsule-he is a boogar and spits the small ones out, he is very talented!
I stuff each cap with as much as I can regarding his meds-
