Tramadol for pain

My Pumpkin has recently been diagnosed with arthritis in his hips. Unfortunately when we x-rayed him, a spot showed up on his lung that is probably cancer. My goal is to keep him comfortable, since at 13 1/2 and I don't think he can handle any major surgery. My vet is giving him Adequan shots and Tramadol for the pain. I gave him two Tramadol pills so far and he threw one up and the other one he drooled so badly that he problably got nothing out of the medication. From what I am reading, Tramadol is very bitter. Any idea how I can get this pill into him? My vet is looking into compounding the medication, but I need to be able to give him something in the meantime. He's only on 1/4 of a 50mg pill, so it is very small. He is not eating very well, so mixing it in his food is out. Any ideas would really be appreciated.

The cause of the vomiting is more than likely a side effect of the Tramadol. As I recall it is an opium based drug and vomiting is one of the potential side effects. Here is a link that you might find helpful about the drug: http://www.drugs.com/tramadol.html

Tramadol tastes terrible. I put the 1/4 of 50 mg in a #4 gelcap.
Some cats become spaced out on it.

Personally, I'm not a big fan of Tramadol. It made my Buster spacey and paranoid. If I didn't get the pill in perfectly, he would foam at the mouth and drool. I hope you find something that works for Pumpkin.
