Wasn't sure how or where to post this but will put it here and it will probably get moved to the Think Tank.

Why couldn't this be used for high dose kitties? Is there an equivalent for Levemir (detemir)? I checked Mark's and cost for 5 pens is $200.00 so I do think it would be a cost savings.

Do all high-dose kitties switch over to detemir (for the most part)?

There's been several discussions on Toujeo. At this time there are no studies of its safety in cats that I'm aware of anyway. There are many high dose cats on Lantus as well as Levemir.

I have seen a few people not on FDMB use Toujeo but I sure wouldn't use it with cat personally.

Another issue is that Toujeo is a u300 insulin which is 3 times stronger than Lantus and Levemir
If kitty is getting 30 of Lantus wouldn't that make it 10 of Toujeo? It was just something I ran across this morning and got to thinking about it. Didn't realize it had already been discussed. Sorry.

Yes and No. There are no U300 syringes so if using U100 syringes, this would be true. Toujeo however is marketed to be used with a special pen and Sanofi decided to rewrite the meaning of a unit for the Toujeo pen such that the ratio compared to Lantus is 1:1. In other words, each unit from the Toujeo pen is actually only 1/3 of a unit. Lots of room for confusion! If using U100 syringes, small dose and small dose changes would be impossible. The formulation is different according to the website but it's unclear what the difference is but it seems to be related to duration. In humans, Toujeo is touted to last 24 hours. While Lantus lasts 24 hours in some humans, many use it twice daily as we do for our kitties. I believe there is some testing in high dose cats currently being done, but right now there is no scientifically sound data proving it's safety in felines.
