I had a lose of an owl today that I loved very much. I use injuried bird's of prey in programs to school groups and have had this owl for 10yrs. She has been a wonderful part of our family, and will be dearly missed.

So the touching story: I have been crying on and off all day and came inside and Copper was lying on his bed and just looked at me like "what's wrong with you?" So i went over and pet him and he looked in my eyes and sat up immediately and started smelling all over my face and then licked my dried tears off my face. It was a touching moment and connection. He is an amazing cat. It was like he said, "its ok mom, I love you!"

I love my cat!

Sorry you had such an emotional day but glad you shared a beautiful story. Amazing cat indeed. He knew you were in pain and needed his version of a hug.

Lori,
Thank you for sharing that story. Having done wildlife rehab for several years, I can relate to what you felt today. We weren't licensed to rehab birds of prey, but were allowed to overnight them when needed until we could turn them over to the proper people. I can remember feeding a great horned owl with a long pair of hemostats through his cage, and owls are truly magnificent creatures. Most nights I can sit on my porch and listen to two or more of them "talk" to each other for hours.

The fact that Copper felt empathy doesn't surprise me at all. My kitties have always done that, and it is always "magic" to me when they do. Beautiful to read about it though, so thanks again for sharing.

Very sorry for your loss, and I think it is terrific what you are doing using them to teach children. There's nothing quite like seeing the "lightbulb go on" in some young kids head when what you tell them helps them to "get it". You are giving a gift that will pay benefits for another generation.

Carl,

Thanks for your comments. That means a lot coming from you as i know you understand. Yes, i am licensed to rehab birds of prey and have released many back into the wild. Unfortunately, some are permantely injured and cannot be relased back into the wild. So i have taken several permanent residents(owls and hawks) that live in outdoor enclosers on our property. "Barny" the barn owl that just died today, was blind and raised from an owlet. She lived inside our house with our family until she could fly, then went to her outdoor home. She went to many schools with me and was a GREAT ambassidor for how wonderful birds of prey are. She will always be remembered in many kids and adults lives, but especially our family. I hated to loose her.

I bet you have lots of owls where you work and live. They are wonderful to hear at night. I never get tired of hearing all the different types of owls at night. Beautiful!

Yes, copper knew i needed the extra TLC at that moment. Amazing that they sense it and show the empathy.

Thanks!

So sorry for your loss, Lori. I think owls are most intriguing animals. Those marvelous eyes and incredible wingspan. And how wonderful that your cat is so in tune with you and loving. Take care. Judy
