I have a cat that’s been diabetic for 3 years and generally unregulated but stable in weight and labs usually. (we are at 4 units lantus twice a day now … on 3.5 units a while ago he had 1 hypo but they said keep going because he is getting worse - we’ve done all the things we’ve reset back to 1 unit etc) Last Tuesday he got the wrong vaccine at the vet (please don’t hang on to this fact this is not the point) and in general super stressful vet visit for him. I had to leave Friday - Saturday to visit my cousin and so a lady came and gave him insulin Friday night and Saturday morning - Saturday afternoon when I got back he seemed fine until I woke up Sunday morning with small spots of bloody pee on the floor - took him to the ER vet, CR 2.0 elevated slightly, magnesium was also only slightly elevated, everything else ok - they think it’s interstitial cystitis and we were sent home with meds (parazosin, bupe morphine and antibiotic) Fast forward to today, he’s somewhat back to normal peeing fine eating ok to get insulin (he’s always nauseous even before he had diabetes so that’s not new).. the catch is I’m supposed to go away for a week next week with family who doesn’t have the same views on sick animals etc. I would obviously like to go on the trip with them as well.. and i know my cat shouldn’t keep me from living me life (he has many times in the past) i just don’t know how well my cat will handle the time away/it’s a 9 hour drive home if anything were to happen… any advice? Stay? Go? Go half of the time? I just don’t know. He is doing better but on the chance that this lady coming to watch him stresses him out or something and I have to drive 9 hours back?? I’m so torn. The pet sitter can’t test but she can give insulin twice a day and stop at 11 am and 11 pm to make sure he is alive and peeing and eating (he is a scaredy-cat so I don’t know if this will make everything worse or not). Any advice would be awesome!
