Thankfully, Cassie's blood sugar numbers are coming down. However, he's still peeing lakes. I'm getting tired of the nasty litter box and it's hard to keep up with him. Any suggestions? I've considered other options like the Breeze but I haven't had much luck find one in the store to look at.

Hi, bookwOrm (love that name) ~

Hey, I hear you on the excessive urination! May I just say that I'm glad for you that Cassie is doing his peeing in the litter box. Our cat Butters goes in very inappropriate places, including our kitchen countertop. We love him dearly no matter what, so we'll keep working on tighter regulation.

How tightly controlled do blood sugar numbers need to be for the urination to slow down?

Eva

P.S. Cassie's so cute!

Unfortunately, you won't see improvement with the urination until his numbers are a bit lower. Once those numbers get regularly down below the renal threshold (which is 180-240 for cats), then you'll see an improvement with the urination.

I have the Breeze and I absolutely love it. There's a $10 coupon on their web site if you're thinking of buying one: http://www.breezeforcats.com/storeLocator.html. It is SO easy to clean. Keep in mind though that you'll probably need to change the pads more frequently then the recommended once a week until his BG comes down a bit. When Bandit had his brief relapse in July, I had to change the pads about twice a week until his numbers came down.

Here's a possible finagle:

You might be able to rig up something using one of the self-straining litterboxes which has 2 pans and a strainer. Or use some plastic screening from a hardware store and 2 pans..

Place some sort of blocks under the strainer section to accomodate the "urine lake" or use an absorbent pad on the bottom to soak up said lake - you may be replacing these daily, though.

Use crystal type litter - the urine drips right down, only the feces are on top of the crystals and must be scooped out. Sift it in the strainer or screen first and dispose of any dust or small particles, so they won't wind up going down the toilet or drain.

When cleaning the box, lift the strainer out and move it over to the other pan; you may want to rinse it first.

Drain, clean, and dry the used pan for the next day.

Repeat as needed.

Thanks for the suggestion, BJM. I broke down and.bought a.brewze. Cass climbed in and peed as soon as I set it up! Now if his brother will also use it; I may buy a second if they work. We'll.see how long the pad will last. I figure they'll.go fast with 2, one of whom is a champion pee-r. But even if they only last a couple days it should be better than the gluey mess of too much pee in clumping clay.
