Too much food for Waffles

I finally met my son's cat... apperently I am Waffle's granma. She is so adorable and he loves her dearly,, but I think he feeds her too much dry food and she is overweight. He says they just put the food out and she can eat as much as she wants. I don't think I overfed Sophia or Greylie... since I measured the food which was dry but both were diabetic. We had to give shots and I changed to wet food and they both were diet controlled the rest of their lives.

I mentioned to my son how Sophia got diabetic.... I don't want to interfere.. my son just got married and the cat belongs to his wife too... I don't want to be the interfering mother-in-law. but... how can I best explain after all I went through it and it is not easy.
 
What dry food are they feeding?
If you can lightly suggest feeding canned then suggest that they feed a go, lower carb dry and portion it out. Not eat as much as they want. If Waffles is overweight use that as the reason. Tell them that being overweight makes the cat more susceptible to diabetics and also can cause other health problems.
