Good Morning, I hope it is ok to post here...

I tested Prince before he ate this morning (7:15am) and he was the lowest he has ever been-137. He is scheduled to get his shot at 8am. I will test him after he eats, but is this normal?? I thought he was supposed to be higher-at least 200-when I get up to feed him. Will the 2.5 u be too much? If he is around 200 when I test him right before the shot, is that ok?

Thank you!

Update: I tested him after eating and right before his shot-he was at 175. I gave only 2.0u (usually 2.5). Will be monitoring him closely. Is testing every hour ok or should it be more?

Hon, Lantus and Levemir are both depot insulin. You don't reduce the dose by the preshot, but by the nadir, the lowest point in the cycle.

I am hoping you got some advice this morning in the HEALTH forum, it is really slow around here on weekends. Anytime you have a question about dosing or anything and there is no one around, please go to the Health board, there is almost always someone there that can help you.

I haven't looked at your SS, so I have no idea if your dose is appropriate, I'm not on this board much because we changed insulin.

Hang in there and know that there are people here that can help you, even if they aren't on this board.

After looking at Prince's SS, my advice would be to drop his dose to 1U and hold it for a minimum 3 days. If the numbers aren't where they need to be, increase by .25 for another minimum 3 days, etc continuing until you start getting the numbers Prince needs.

This is the way it's done, Start Low - Go Slow. With his dose at 2-2.5U, it may be entirely too high for him. If you increase more than .25 you may miss the 'good dose' that works for him. Being a depot insulin, it takes 3-5 days to show what the dose will do.

I know you're new to this and I understand how frustrating it can be, I was there too, a year ago. But you have to keep in mind that this is a marathon, not a sprint. Prince did not become diabetic over night and he won't get better over night either.

I'll check in on you tomorrow, hang in there hon, it will get easier.

Remember, any problems, go to Health and there should be someone there to help you, if there is no one in Relaxed Lantus.
