Tomorrow Splodge will be finally be having his dental and he will probably be having most of his teeth out!

Anybody got any advice for me? He is not allowed to eat after 10pm. So if his pmps is the same as it has been recently, am I best skipping the shot? His last meal would be at the pmps.

I know the basics of post op care as I worked in a vets and in rescue for many years, but I've never cared for a post op diabetic.

I am so worried about my little man, but I know its the right thing. He has been so amazing this last week, He's playing constantly, being naughty again and the affection levels are back to off the scale! He even had the nerve to swipe at me for removing him from the xmas tree! :-D

• X-rays: either before or the day of the procedure. Also x-rays after to make sure there are no tooth fragments left after an extraction.
• Bloodwork: prior to the dental to rule out anything that would prevent the procedure
• Pre-anesthesia sedation/induction: Ketamine (some has been recalled), propofol, valium. Induction should be with an IV drug vs. a gas.
• Anesthesia: Sevo or Isoflurane (these should not be used for induction, however)
• Blood pressure monitoring (Doppler or Cardell monitor)
• Cardiac monitor: pulse oximeter or cardiac monitor
• IV catheter for fluid access
• Post-procedure antibiotics if necessary. (See Dr. Lisa’s commentary)
• Pain meds: administered post-procedure and to take home: Buprenex, no metacam due to the potential for renal failure. A fentanyl patch may be excessive for the purpose of this kind of pain management.

This is something you should (have) asked the vet...what does the vet suggest.

If he gets regular feeding in the evening, and pmps is in the 'normal' range,
you might give a 1/2 dose.

I'm not a vet, so my advise is my opinion, only.
 
If I took the advice of my vet, Splodge would still be on 3 units no matter what his numbers were!

I am doing this completely on my own and was hoping to get opinions from others who know a little more about FD than me.

I will see what his numbers are at 10pm and then just hope I make the right decision!
 
Mowgli just had his done last week, he came out 4 teef less...

My vet only wanted him to NOT have insulin the morning OF the surgery...
But again, it may be vet preference :smile:
Night before was okay to give, and the evening after was good to go as well..(of course number dependent)
