Hi Everyone.

Angel has to have a bad tooth pulled that showed up out of nowhere. I had her teeth cleaned last year hoping she wouldn't have to be put under Anesthesia for the rest of her life. Now she has an infected fang..

I dont know what to do about her insulin dose?? I will be able to feed her before she goes. But she may not be worked on for a couple hrs. and then we cant pick her up untill 5:30. She wont eat anything at the vets I am sure as she hates going there (of Course). So I am totally confused on what to do? Any help would be greatly appreciated.. Ive got her up to 1.3u now. She isnt regulated though just yet , she is very hard to manage on her bg levels.
Ill be checking frequently for an answer.

THANK YOU IN ADVANCE.

Diana

Re: Tomorrow going to vet for tooth pulling Help with ins do

Hi,

When my cats have undergone anesthesia my vet said not to give any food from 9pm the previous evening. The stomach needs to be empty. (Water was allowed early in the morning though.)
And I was told to give no insulin on the morning of the procedure because a) the kitty would not be eating it's normal food and the insulin could be too much, and b) the blood glucose level can drop during anesthesia.

Others here may have had different experiences.

What has your vet said?

What does your vet say? The vets I have went too said 1/2 insulin dose and 1/2 food the morning of. However, I would follow what your recommends

Re: Tomorrow going to vet for tooth pulling Help with ins do

thanks very much, My vet really has no clue on her numbers ect. they said give her some food and her insulin. But I am thinking maybe no ins. she has a record of dropping and crashing on me.. so I am a bit worried about any ins. as We wont be able to pick her up untill 5:30pm..

Re: Tomorrow going to vet for tooth pulling Help with ins do

Since she has a history of dropping and crashing as you say, if it were me, I wouldn't give any insulin the morning of.

You can't trust they will monitor her that closely when she is in there ( I personally don't trust anyone when it comes to my kitties, have had too many vets screw up).

Better to be high for the day than go too low.

Re: Tomorrow going to vet for tooth pulling Help with ins do

Better safe than sorry. Better too high than too low. When my cats go in for a dental I don't even give any insulin the night before since they graze all night normally and I worry what will happen without food.

Re: Tomorrow going to vet for tooth pulling Help with ins do

Thank you all so much for the input.. I was feeling the same way. no ins. I am just scared to death she might crash. So I am going to side with no insulin for tomorrow. I dont trust vets anymore myself, Ive lost too many pets due to their not paying close enough attention. especially with older animals..

thanks again, I can sleep now..

Re: Tomorrow going to vet for tooth pulling Help with ins do

Thanks for the suggestions I've been a ball of nerves all day, but everything seems to have gone well with her. They did pull her tooth. I gave her a tiny dose .10 this morning. They checked her at noon and she was 375 before her dental work,
a bit high, but like you say high is better than too low.. We will be picking her up in a couple of hrs.
Iam hoping she will eat when she gets home.. Thanks again for the reply.

Watch her carefully tonight, because the anesthesia she had can make the BGs lower than normal tonight.

Angel made it yea!! I haven't checked her bg yet. She is eating and looks good. I am relieved! :-D

Re: Tomorrow going to vet for tooth pulling Help with ins do

Good news on Angel! I bet you are so glad to have her home.

When my Wink had his dental back in January, he dived right into the food. Never seen him so hungry. I fed him small portions over several hours just so he would not throw it all back up.
