We were only using the ProZinc for about a week. I am not really happy with how it was going and I have Lantus and plenty of syringes because I am a diabetic myself.
So, we switched Tommy. He will always have fresh insulin because it will come from my bottle which gets used up in about a month as is.

I took him to a new vet this morning that completely approves using the Lantus and said I might do well starting at 2 units twice daily since he is still over 300 constantly on the Prozinc.

I have his spreadsheet and will keep it updated.

This morning his shot was late because I wanted to make sure the vet did not want to test to see what he was without his insulin or anything like that.
Of course, it took longer than it was supposed to and he got a late shot and his blood sugar was 430.

I don't know if I want to do tight or relaxed Lantus yet.

Welcome Karen? and extra sweet Tommy The Cat

Gotta ask since my DH is a bass player...Tommy The Cat...Panthera?

Okay give me a sec to look at his spreadsheet sheet and catch up on what he was doing on Prozinc.. If you use Lantus yourself I don't need to explain the differences between Lantus and Prozinc because you already understand how a depot insulin works :-D

Don't worry about which way you want to go right now. Or even which forum. Nobody bites and pretty much either protocol flies in either forum just as long as we know which you're following. Nor is there any law that you can't post in both. In fact I do. My personal diabetic Autumn I post here and she's a SLGS protocol girl. She's a special case and fairly ancient (16-18), However my new foster is only 8yrs old is obese, just taken off 37% carb diet and was being grossly overdosed on 11u bid. So he has a condo in both forums

Welcome.

As Mel said, it really doesn't matter, you're welcome anywhere. My Lucian was a Lantus kitty, which is why we're here, but he's been on Levemir since July and we're still here 'cause it's where we feel at home. :-D

Hope he does great on the Lantus, the vast majority do, but my Lucian wasn't one of them.

Karen, since Tommy is new to Lantus, you might want to start at a lower dose than 2 units. We see this a lot with vets starting our kitties too high. We recommend starting at 1 unit every 12 hours and holding it while the depot fills, unless he drops below 50

Not only is it safer for Tommy, it's also the best way to find that "best dose" that will keep Tommy in pancreas healing numbers (50-130) Cats are lucky in that their pancreas can heal and return to normal function

Good luck with extra sweet Tommy and I know you'll do great!!

A quick question...How big a guy is Tommy? (and I was corrected by my DH..it's Primus  )

While normally we like to see newly dxed started on between .5 & 1u bid. Since he was originally started Prozinc and is switching over to Lantus, we have to consider is last dose as well and that looks like that was 1.5u and the lowest he went on that was the yellows. I might have started him at that same 1.5 that he was on with Prozinc. But you're probably fairly safe at 2u since you're already testing.
