Tommy has not had insulin in 2 days and has topped out at 120 mg/dl in 3 and there were lows 3 days ago.
He is 81 even after a big evening meal a couple of hours ago.

I took his pmps a few minutes early tonight and I still don't know if I should shoot him. He is running perfect after almost 48 hours off insulin?

The depot might still be having a lowering effect on his BG. But the nice thing you are seeing is that even when you see a higher number (and 120 is in the range of "normal" so it isn't high), his BG is coming back down even without added insulin. If he's at 81 two hours after eating, it looks like his pancreas is doing something to lower his BGs. That's awesome!

It's not usual for a kitty to go from 1.5u to zero that fast. But that's what you are seeing right now with Tommy. He may or may not need insulin in the near future. But I'm thinking "go with what's working" as long as it is working. If you don't see him climb up into blue numbers and stay there for a few hours, I think I'd hold off on the juice. And if he does need a shot, I'm thinking a small dose and see what happens. Like "less than a unit" small.

I am no expert and do not give advice, but my opinion is that it looks like Tommy is trying to head for remission already. I hope he keeps this up. I'm sure someone with more experience and knowledge than I will give you some good advice to add to Carl's. Good luck!

I am wondering if he is headed toward OTJ too because he is getting lower after he eats and his depot should be about gone.

I will keep checking him and keep posting. I am hopeful!

2.5 days with no insulin and he was 51 at "shot time" and is 56 eating normally 5 hours later.
His pancreas is definitely kicking some butt.
But I think we may be OTJ!! I am still going to test as often as I can this weekend and I will change him to 2 tests a day monday if he is still running like this and gradually just check him every day and watch him closely.

You guys keep your fingers crossed.

my opinion is that this is great! :-D

you want to keep in mind, assuming he stays in this range with no insulin, that he is a diet-controlled diabetic. for the rest of his life you want to avoid any dry food, steroids unless absolutely necessary, or sugar in meds. if he gets sick, check his BGs. infection can raise blood sugar.

continue to check his BGs once a month or so, just to catch any relapses right away.

celebrating with you - i hope it holds!

3 days, no insulin, running in the 50s today.

I know I have to keep a good check on him =) I am so happy for the little guy. I am so glad I went ahead and insisted on the Lantus and stuff.
His life will be fairly normal now. The yummy wet food is an improvement to him =D

I still remember the day almost three years ago when I walked into the house with a couple of cases of FF and Friskees and dumped the dry food in the yard for the raccoons. Put down the bowls for Bob and Mullet and said "this is it from now on boys". And they both looked up at me like "OMG! Where has THIS stuff been my whole life?". It was gone in minutes, and they hoovered every meal after that like they were afraid it might someday no longer be on the menu.:-)

Fantastic numbers for Tommy!

Carl

Tommy's numbers resemble the recent numbers of my cat, Shadow, who went OTJ a few weeks ago (and is doing well). I almost OD'd him on insulin before I started testing his BG! Anyway, Shadow went from 1.5u twice a day to OTJ in 41 days once I changed his diet to LC wet food. This period included a couple of weeks with 0.25u and 0.1u (in other words almost no insulin) before he went OTJ. I think you should hang in there with no insulin and see how it goes. Shooting green numbers is scary so I say avoid it if possible. If you see two or three consecutive blue numbers, then consider giving Tommy 0.25u and working back to another OTJ trial ASAP. Any way it goes, maintain the LC wet food diet and soldier on. Best of luck to you and Tommy.

i'd encourage you to keep up your spreadsheet so that if tommy does get higher numbers, we have a record of what you've tested. it can help us see the "story" of what's going on if you end up needing help from us. sometimes numbers do wobble on OTJ cats - if you see numbers of concern, post here and let us help you make a decision on what to do next.
