The little guy is only 48 and we haven't given him insulin today at all and it is almost time for his PM dose.
I plan to not shoot again and check him during the night and see what it's doing in the morning and possibly drop him to 1.25. I had considered 1 considered taking it on down to 1, but I want to see if it is still running <50 after meals and late at night.
I know that he hasn't been quite through a whole cycle, but I am not even getting numbers high enough to feel secure shooting.

you don't want to shoot a 48! good call on that.

let's see what he's like in the morning. it looks like he needs a lower dose so you can shoot consistently twice a day. he is looking super right now.

here's your last post: 12/15 Tommy Did you see all the later posts? There is a lot of good information on there that will help you make decisions. nothing wrong with asking for help - we expect it - but sometimes no one is available and you need help now.

also, if you have to leave him during a cycle and can't monitor, always leave plenty of food out for him. most cats will eat if their BGs go low. it doesn't replace monitoring but sometimes we can't and it adds a little bit of safety for Tommy. many people use a timed feeder - we used the Petsafe 5 Compartment feeder and really liked it.

You might even want to go ahead and take him down to 1 unit IF he's high enough to shoot...We use 150 as a "don't shoot and ask for help" number here..at least until you have more data on how Tommy responds to food so if you get 150 or below, post and add "Stalling..need advice" to your subject line..it will help get you some help sooner, but there are always going to be times when you need to make a decision on your own, so the Sticky at the top of the page titled "Shooting and Handling Low Numbers" can be a great guide.

We always recommend starting at 1 unit because so many vets start them too high...Looks like maybe Tommy isn't going to need quite so much!

Good luck with him! Exciting that you're seeing such nice numbers so soon in this adventure!

He was still only 64 at a LATE pre-shot time.
I think we will just start him back tomorrow on only 1 unit IF he isn't going into some super-quick remission.
I will make sure he gets a test in a couple hours since he ate.

I think you made a couple of good decisions, skip tonight and restart at 1u tomorrow. You may see pretty high numbers in the morning because of the skipped shot, don't panic! The shed will refill quickly and then you can see what 1u does. If he bounces remember that it can take up to 3 cycles to clear. Lantus is a waiting game.

Also if you ever do stall and then decide to shoot, remember that the next shot will need to be 12 hours after the time that you actually gave the shot, not your normal time.

I hate to be the naysayer here but I would reduce to 1.25u. Given the number of dose changes plus a skipped shot, I'm concerned that if you drop the dose too much, you'll lose momentum. It may be a matter of making the call regarding dose in the morning.

pretty amazing. cats don't usually go OTJ like this. sometimes really low numbers will shock the pancreas into working again - i wouldn't have thought the 39 was low enough, but who knows.

it's all looking great. i'm glad you're not assuming that he's fine and are still checking him. if you see his numbers creeping up, i'd encourage you to not wait to restart the insulin. everything under 120 is normal - so for now, he's sure looking awesome. i hope you'll keep us up to date on what's going on with him! i'm very curious!
