It's been awhile again, just so gosh darn busy. I say quietly hopeful since it's been a long haul to the good numbers. Those who know Tommy know he likes to find contraband food and it does a huge spike in his numbers. Except for a few higher numbers he has been cruising under the renal threshold lately. Each day I hope the string of blues continue. Maybe it will be Tommy's turn soon, (shhhhh) With paws and fingers crossed........ nailbite_smile

I have tried a couple of things with his insulin, as you will see. I need to stress that this is only for Tommy and shouldn't be followed.
 
Tommy is looking good, Sandy. Very brave dosing, and it seems to be working. I'd keep doing what you're doing. :-D And yes, good to warn others that the dosing is unique to Tommy.
 
Thanks, Sue. Last month I was crying and this month I'm mostly smiling. :-D I know I have more leeway with Prozinc with the timing as I work crazy hours. DH has been helpful to shoot when the timer goes off. He is getting better to test if I get held up from work. He is also getting better remembering to put up the dog food, too.

I will put the dosing warning in my signature as well. I promise that I won't dose if he goes too low. These blues have to be helping his pancreas. Again, I'm quietly hopeful!
 
Sue, at what point do I try no insulin? I'd hate to do it too soon and have to "fix" the cycle. I also don't want a hypo. ohmygod_smile My theory is to get him use to those lower blue numbers so his body doesn't panic and send him bouncing.
 
Not sure. You are shooting at some really low numbers, but it seems to be working well. I'd be really nervous shooting under 100. And he still jumps up, so his pancreas isn't showing up all that often. If his pancreas does join the party, you may be in trouble. With an 84, he doesn't have much room to drop.

I don't know. As long as DH can monitor and you can bring him back up if he drops, those blues and greens sure look nice.
 
I see what you mean here. Last time I posted we were trying to decide if I was giving too much or not enough. I came to the conclusion that I wasn't giving enough. He started coming down with a higher dose. When I was shooting low I was thinking that those few drops were just covering his food. I've been reading other posts while here tonight and just read that LC food will make his pancreas go to work if indeed it is working. Duh, Sandy! That's what it is suppose to do ohmygod_smile so in light of this you make perfect sense. I will be more cautious with the dosing. I think my previous theory is still valid but may see how high he goes with no insulin at those very low numbers. I really appreciate your help and advise. That's why I keep coming back! :mrgreen:
 
I am not saying change what you are doing. It seems to be working. I just think you need to be careful as someday, if the pancreas joins in, you may get a low number surprise. So be prepared and have DH prepared, as he might need to react. (if you want I can give you a quick and dirty plan for low numbers for you to post somewhere for DH)

Small frequent meals can stimulate the pancreas, but you may already be doing that.

Tommy's amps was 167, gave .4u
+5 = 70 I'm heading for work shortly. This is going to be a late night. I'm hoping DH will test before I get home. I don't encourage him to give Tom a snack as he can go a little overboard. :roll: I have to make more foodcicles as then they are more of a "snack " and not a meal. Will catch up again soon :mrgreen:
 
If the blood glucose levels are in the 50s, feed a tablespoon of the regular wet low carb and retest in 20- 30 minutes to be sure the number is rising, not falling.

If the level is in the 40s, feed a tablespoon of the gravy off the higher carb food. Retest in 20-30 minutes to be sure he is rising. Take at least two more tests, 30 minutes apart, to be sure the number continues to go up.

If the number continues to drop and is in the low 40s, rub a teaspoon full of Karo syrup onto his gums. Retest in 20 minutes to be sure he is rising. Take at least 2 more tests, 30 minutes apart, to make sure the numbers continue to rise.

If he drops to below 40, I would take him to the vet. Rub some syrup onto his gums before going.

Others may have ideas to add, but those are the basics.

Another question. Tommy loves to go out and lay on our steps. He was a rescue so it is in his blood to want to enjoy the outdoors. He stays close to the house and doesn't wander off. The horseflies are horrible right now and Tommy's face is full of sores. I've put antibiotic ointment on them, though he hates that worse than pokes. Any tips that may help prevent them from biting? They don't seem to bother the civvies like they do Tommy.
