One year ago today, on January 5th, 2022 the vet called to tell us Hendrick had diabetes and my world fell apart. I remember feeling so lost, confused, and devastated. Just completely overwhelmed.

I had failed him -- surely I caused it by giving too many temptations! By free feeding him dry food for his whole life! How could I be such a terrible Cat Dad?? I felt so helpless and powerless.

And then 3 days later he would be hospitalized for DKA. Upon his release I finally realized I needed to suck it up and learn about this disease, that the vet was not going to cut it -- Hendrick needed me to figure this out!

I Googled FD and found the FDMB, and you all saved my boy and saved me in the process. I truly owe a debt I can never fully repay. Real-life heroes like Melissa, Diane, Elise, Bron, Suzanne, Sienne, Bhooma, Dixon and Wendy...and so many others.

He has now been a diet-controlled diabetic feline for 6 months and still going strong! Thanks to Lantus/Glargine, TR and of course most importantly -- the FDMB. Reminds me I need to donate again!

Hendrick says hello and he love you all, but he's too busy sleeping on my shoulder to comment further.

You were just like most of the rest of us! You didn't know any better (and most of us relied on our vet who was telling us the dry food helps keep their teeth clean)

The day I got the diagnosis on China, I hit Google and almost every search I did led me to a thread here. It didn't take a piano to fall on me to make me realize this was where I needed to be!

We're all thrilled for you and Hendricks! :D:D:D:D:D

You did the right thing but being blissfully unaware has it's advantages.
I got Leroy and BJ as kittens around 1980. They were outdoor cats when I rented a shack on a tree farm and how a coyote never carried one away was dumb luck. Leroy also got hit by a car and broke his jaw, fell through a third floor screen into a snow bank and once flickered a bit when he walked across a candle.
The worst food, being outside in -40 weather and an F5 tornado added up to BJ living to 17 and Leroy made it to 23. Sometimes you just get lucky.
