To Zyrtek or not that is the question Glycol ??

MY ten year old civie, Sadie, has had terrible allergies including runny nose, scratching, biting, sneezing and it grows worse. She's been on AB's, Pred, Depo. Chloro, Claritin , Clavamox and Zeniquin, which used to work and now doesn't. Vet says no to Apoquil (sp?) and today no to Zyrtek and once again wants me to bring her in.
Which means lots of test that prove nothing. The last two kitties I brought there were very ill. He put thme through extensive tests and they both passed in just weeks after being tortured. I bought some Z and if I get enough positives I'm going ahead with it. No more visits for the same thing they have been trying to cure for years. I actively treat for fleas and have not seen any on any cats even though I know one flea can..blah blah blah and blah.

A word of caution: Zyrtec (cetirizine) makes both my cats very hungry, not as much as cyproheptadine, but almost. They have had allergies for a few years now. Tequila is on cetirizine and Hobbes on hydroxyzine since he gets terrible earwax (a rare side effect) from cetirizine.

@Carol & Murphy uses Zyrtec for Murphy's allergies.
I've used it a few times and had no problems. If it made them more hungry I couldn't tell as they always claim to be starving!

Murphy regularly (for months on end) gets 1/2 tab of zyrtec once a day for seasonal allergies
This allergy season, his vet supplemented that with a new drug called Apoquel - it was developed for canine cutaneous allergies, but they are trying it out for other allergic symptoms as well. Worked great on Murphy I wish zyrtec would act as an appetite stimulant for Murphy - unfortunately, there is no effect at all

I think it's just the stuff in the pill coating that makes it time release. Shouldn't be a problem.

Can't say I used zyrtec on Smokey. But I did use a 1/4 tab of plain zyrtec on civvie Tux about 2 weeks ago for a lot of sneezing. It worked well. Used it for 3 days. I think he was sneezing from seasonal change and we are sanding wood in the basement so I'm sure there is dust from that.

Miralax is polyethylene glycol 3350 and is used for constipation in both humans and companion animals

Murphy has gotten 1/2 tab zyrtec a day for months on end for a few years now with no ill effects

Vet said don't give Zyrtec. Instead, bring kitty in (as he wrung his hands at the thought of more tests that prove nothing) He also said he would not approve Apoquel. So, I gave a half tab or Zyrtec. It is working albeit not consistent. However, working enough to give a lot of relief. She seem quite a bit better with less heavy sneezing. Thank you all for your great.
