Hello fellow cat parents,
This is Titan’s mom. We have been silent since Titan the Wonder Cat crossed the Rainbow Bridge. Grief still washes over us regularly. Guess it always will. All of you were so helpful. We could not have kept him comfortable without the combined knowledge and compassion of the FDMB. I’m asking for your help again. Titan’s brother Seamus has struvite crystals with a complete blockage. (We went through this with Titan but he was Mr. Mellow.) Seamus is not eating his wet c/d or the dry s/o. Can anyone suggest a way to make this food more palatable? Is there a healthy acidic food we can put on top to tempt him? I’m buying organic hemp oil for him. We’ve stop his pain meds. Vet said that was fine. To go to the vet he has to be totally sedated. My gentle, bottle feed baby turns into a monster. I had to hold him to administer drugs through catheter. Staff was afraid. He is so traumatized. Any suggestions to get him eating would be appreciated. Also, if I’ve posted this in the wrong spot, please direct me to a more appropriate discussing group. Thanks again for your help, Paula.

no experience with this particular problem, can only send prayers and vines

I presume you're already adding apple cider vinegar and vitamin C to his water or food; it's quiet today on the list but with any luck someone more knowledgeable will be on soon -- you may know more than most of us do !

So sorry to hear poor Seamus is going through this.:( I miss your Titan, too. I hope you guys are well--and will be even better soon when you get Seamus feeling better!

The following is a list of ideas I've seen posted on the board a few times. I don't know whether they're suitable for Seamus's situation, but maybe there's something you can consider. My Felix isn't very enthusiastic about wet food, and sprinkling on a little FortiFlora definitely makes him more interested in it.

-making a buffet to give him choices
- heating food

sprinkle food with :
- forta flora -- a probiotic you can get at vets or online. is very smelly and cats love the taste of it.
- parmesan cheese
- smashed crumbles of dry food
- bonito tuna flakes
- halo chicken treats -- crumble into dust over food
- poor a little water from tuna in water over food ( I use low sodium/no sodium added as other kinds in water has veg. broth in it and I assume that means onions, which are toxic to cats-- check labels)
-powdered oregano. yep sounds weird . but some cats like it and it will entice them to eat.

other ideas of foods to offer your kitty to stim appy:
- trader joe tuna for cats
-baby food -- beechnut turkey and broth or chicken and broth. they have no onions or other additives. some babyfoods have onions . please read labels if you can't find beechnut.
- kentucky fried chicken
- deli turkey /chicken
- plain cooked ( boiled or baked ) chicken breast
-canned chicken for people (watch the label that their are no onions)
- chicken broth -- low sodium

Hi Paula, so nice to see you. In addition to the great suggestions that Susan mentioned above, it would be very important to try and add as much water to the food as you can. This info section talks a bit more about crystals...https://catinfo.org/feline-urinary-tract-diseases/#crystals

I don't have first hand experience but hope others who do will stop by. Any chance your vet can do home visits since Seamus has such a tough time going to the vet?

Best wishes to you and Ed, I think of you guys and Titan often....Maverick misses his late night shenanigans with his old pal :cat::bighug:

Please keep us posted on how Seamus is doing.

Hello Paula,
:bighug: how good to see you here even under such sad circumstance – I mean poor Seamus:(

Although I am strong believer in healing and detoxing properties of ACV and being taking 2T a day myself for many years now but I am not giving it to Ducia, not yet anyway. I did a lot of reading online but I am still not clear/indecisive if it IS safe for cats – or rather for cats on a dose of Lantus...you may have fewer risks(if any at all) trying it with non FD cat.

I hope I do not mistake the poster but I believe that @MrWorfMen's Mom used ACV before and might be able to share practical data. I apologize if a wrong person was tagged :).

Here is the interesting piece from Dr. Pierson on UTI/ obstruction:

if the patient has a properly documented problem with bladder stones or a large amount of crystals, look for one that is low in phosphorus – either below ~1.0-1.2% dry matter (not ‘as fed’), or below ~300 mg/100 kcal.

And then:

When considering water versus phosphorus content, as noted above, the water issue is the most important but if you are really worried about crystals (even though they are not an abnormal finding in cat urine as discussed below), pick a diet that is low in phosphorous.

Do you still have Dr. Pierson’s Chart for foods? I have a copy I can attach.

Look up any low P food and try it with plenty of water – it might restore the appy. Some suggested using home cooked meat only (no bones) broth and use it instead of plain water; it should add palatability. I was feeding lower P food for a while now and I can see the difference of it in her overall being. Watered-down lower P foods will help preventing crystals and might taste better.

Down that page Dr. Pierson also speaks about Rx foods being not the best choice in some cases.
(That whole page about UTI is one very good read!)ETA: as suggested above, only now noticed.

Grief still washes over us regularly. Guess it always will.

People do say that one gets better AT it with time…
You , Ed and Titan are so very fondly remembered here!
Sending appy vines to poor Seamus, keep us posted

Thanks to everybody who generously responded. Ed says hello. I’m hitting Dr. Lisa’s chart again. After Tian went celestial walkabout, we fell off the nutrition wagon. No excuses. All your suggestions are so helpful. I’m sharing them with our vet for the other pet parents she advises. Hopefully, we can get Seamus back to being healthy. @Christie & Maverick, Maverick , sweet boy, it’s nice to see your pic again. It was comforting to know that you were in the lagoon with Titan all those late nights. Does Titan still contact you when you go for a dip?
