? Tips on shaving huge mats

I got the clippers, I got the cat, I got the matts. Any tips? Go against the fur, or with the fur? Use the largest comb that fits on the clippers or go without any combs? I'm terrified so any helpful hints will do. How do I see if there are any sores? What do I do if I knick a sore? Tips, tricks anything will do.

I would start with at least a medium comb in case there's sores if you think their are any. It should be painless. Is it pretty quiet?
 
Clip opposite of hair growth pattern - yes against the fur, the length I would choose is the med length one as Janet said. You can go inward just a small amt at a time, you don’t want to get tangled in the mat. Then go back in unless you are trying to get it all at once? That would depend on how much (size) of the mat. If you have both hands available then hold the hair up with a comb & cut right above it so you don’t hit the skin. That’s what we did in the hair salon. Good luck & you go!
 
If it’s too close to the skin just do a little at a time. Otherwise you may pull & she’ll never let you near her again! I learned this with my old cat Sam GA... once is all we got, we even gave him a sedative & it seemed to make him even more angry... days later I finally used a small amt. If olive oil & eventually combed it out. His hair was very soft & fine. So that matters too. How’re doing so far? I hope this is over & donr! Lol please for your sake!

Yes it's pretty quiet. She didn't mind when I turned it on. I am desensitizing at the moment. Good idea on the med. Just afraid they are so close to the skin it's not an exspensive one, but there was no directions other than how to basically put it together.
 
If 3 being the shortest, or smallest guard, I’d go for the next 1 or 2 sizes up. That shows how short it will be. Hold the guard parallel or flat to the skin surface & do not angle it. I don’t know if you’ve used or seen clippers used before. I can’t believe it has no directions... good job on desensitisation. It’s worth being slow & cautious to keep her calm; no matter how long or many days it takes!
