Good morning,

Tipper has been on 1.5 units of Lantus for 6 days and we are home testing. Her latest reading was 257. Should I be seeing lower numbers? She a vet appointment Thursday and is staying all day for testing.
She is eating ok about 1 can of classic FF and 1/4 cup of dry DM . I plan to wean her off the DM but she lost so much weight I need to make sure she is eating. She still is drinking large amounts of water and is peeing alot. Will I see any reduction in her drinking and urine output?

She is currenly in a spare bedroom since she is so shy and runs and hides. She seems to be adjusting to the routine and is much more active and not too stressed out. If you remember my last post she was a feral cat but is loveable on her own terms of course!!

I will ask my vet these questions tomorrow but I look forward to your input and support.
Thanks, Patty

Fantastic that you were successful hometesting - and with a difficult cat! Welcome to the Vampire Club! :RAHCAT :RAHCAT If you are testing, there is really no reason to have the vet test her blood glucose levels. Kitties get stressed at the vet with all the strange noises, smells and people. Stress raises blood glucose levels. So the levels the vet gets, and will base his doses on, may not be the levels you get at home. Sometimes that means too much insulin once your kitty gets home.

For your dose questions, the best place for you to post is on the Lantus forum. They all use your insulin and have dealt with lots of different situations. viewforum.php?f=9 To post there, it is best to have a spreadsheet as they base their doses on your history of doses/blood glucose levels. Here are the directions for the spreadsheet: Setting up a spreadsheet

Is that a preshot number? If so, that is normal reading. I suggest that you do a curve on Tipper. This means that you get your preshot number and then test every 2 or 3 hours in between then and the next time he is due for a shot. That way you will be able to determine how well the dose is working. Then you will be able to determine if a dose change is needed.

Hi everyone,

Thanks for the quick response, yes that was a pre shot number. I believe the vet is doing the curve Thursday. She suggested that we get a meter and start testing but knowing Tipper I don't think she thought we would have much luck!!! Right now its a two person operation but I'm going to give it a go by myself.

Still alittle concerned by the volumne of water she is drinking and the amount of pee. Does that go down in time?

Thanks,
Patty and Tipper

I didn't use Lantus, so don't know the answer about how things are progressing. Have you seen the Lantus forum? The posters there all use your insulin. The stickies on the top of page give you a lot of information about how Lantus works. Be sure to read the part about the shed. viewforum.php?f=9

I think that is a reasonable PS number considering you are only just starting, so kudos to you for testing! The other really important number though is her nadir, or in otherwords, how low she goes inbetween shots.

Regarding her urine output and water input, it will get better as her numbers improve. Just remember that treating diabetes successfully doesn't happen over night; it takes time to fine tune the dose and food but it does get better!
