Does anybody know if I can use horse wormer (Ivermection, Safeguard, Panacur or other) to get rid of tapeworms AGAIN in Tinkerbell & Tawny's civvie brother Shadow? & if yes how much would I give him? I have the paste. He only weighs about 7 pounds.

I know they are there, I can see them. He has battled them his whole life (age ~ 9 y/o). I thot they were finally gone but now I see they are back. I also have some Drontal I got from the vet for the dogs many months ago that is still laying in the kitchen windowsill, should I give him that instead? Cut it up into what dosage?

I googled all this but it's all too confusing for me so I just came back to the one place I know & trust: FDMB.

Thanks all.

Poor Shadow. I'm sorry to ready about this - it must be very frustrating. I don't know about the other stuff, but my vet has prescribed Panacur for my cats in the past. The dosage is based on weight, so hopefully you can google for the dosage.

Treatment: Praziquantal is one of the most effective medications for both common species of cat tapeworm. Other suitable treatments are fenbendazole and espiprantal. Use under veterinary guidance. Deworming must be combined with control of fleas and lice, in the case of Dipylidium caninum, and by preventing roaming and hunting in the case of other tapeworms.

Fenbendazole (Hoechst brand names Panacur and Safe-Guard, Intervet Panacur and Panacur Rabbit) is a broad spectrum benzimidazole anthelmintic used against gastrointestinal parasites including roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, the taenia species of tapeworms, pinworms, aelurostrongylus, paragonimiasis, strongyles and strongyloides and can be administered to sheep, cattle, horses, fish, dogs, cats, rabbits and seals. Drug interactions may occur if using bromsalan flukicides such as dibromsalan and tribromsalan. Abortions in cattle and death in sheep have been reported after using these medications together.[1]

the drontal you have, is it drontal plus?

i'm googling and it looks like the drontal for dogs is named drontal plus and from what i can find it has one more ingredient than the drontal for cats sooooooooooo, not sure if it would be ok to give what you have to the cats. (cat one shows only 2 ingredients in it)

fwiw, the drontal for cats is sold at petsmart, at least out here it is. they have it in with the vitamins and hairball gels and such. if you don't have a petsmart nearby and have a few days, you can get it cheaper at lambertvetsupply.com

eta: the 3rd ingredient in the drontal plus is something called febantal. googled it and from what i'm seeing it is used as an anti-diarheal in cats sooooooooo, possibly what you've got is ok??? maybe someone knows for sure about the febantal? as far as dose goes, for the regular drontal i found this
