Time of feeding v when giving shot? Is this ok?

I have a question about food and insulin. You may have seen my post yesterday about my Simon being a grazer. He rarely eats a lot of food in one sitting. So, an hour or so (45 mins usually) before he is to get his shot, I check his BS and then feed him. It takes that long to get enough food into him before I give the insulin. For example, he is due for his shot in a few minutes and he still hasn't eaten half a can of FF. I added a few of his crunchies in there and he ate a little more, but it is slow going to get enough in there to give him his shot of 2 units!

Is that ok? Should the time of feeding/shot be closer together than 45 mins to an hour? TIA for any information.

He ate most of the can of FF and then I gave him his insulin. It seems if I hang out with him and sweet talk him the whole time, he will eat more. I keep pushing the bowl towards him when he wants to walk away and telling him to eat a little more and he does! :o

Hi! I am so glad you told me that you made a typo about Simon's weight. Seeing your post yesterday made my heart stop because I had a kitty that lost alot of weight quickly and then had bad liver issues. Whew!

I usually give Simon his shot while he is eating his food and test right before I give him the shot. I think it is better to test right before you feed him so you get a good true reading, but I understand your concern since he only grazes. Have you tried the Blue Wilderness duck canned food? That might help with his skin issues. It is also low carb. There are also other more specialty canned foods that have duck and pea in them (I can't think of the names right now). As long as you are hometesting and getting tests fairly often the first few weeks, you will be able to tell if the insulin he is getting is too much.

You are doing a great job. Keep it up!!

I've found with Frog, on the days he isn't so 'interested' in his food, that it helps a lot if I hold his dish for him, usually approximately shoulder height. On his own, (on those days) he might eat maybe a quarter to a half of a can of FF, but then if I hold it for him, he will eat almost all of what is left... I'm not sure if he is eating just because he thinks I want him to, or if it is simply more comfortable (or less Uncomfortable) when I'm holding it.

I realize some folks might think I'm ridiculous, but ... I'd rather hold his food every time (if I need to, of course) and make sure he is eating properly, than to just let him be (especially since I want him to gain some weight back!)

I don't think it is ridiculous at all  I do whatever will get him to eat. Tonight that included hanging out with him on the floor and he did indeed finish his whole can of FF mixed grill classics. Going to do a BG test at the 4 hour mark before I head to bed for the night. Still haven't seen great numbers yet but I will keep trying. He is taking to the wet food very well which makes me happy for sure.

No, neither of you are ridiculous. If you were, then probably half the people on this board would be ridiculous too. We are loving, concerned, cat slaves. ohmygod_smile

I did the same things for Wink, to encourage him to eat on those days where his appetite wasn't very good. He liked the company at breakfast, lunch and dinner. Who likes to eat alone? Nobody!

Since you are all set up now - if you have dosing questions - or general ones about Prozinc you might get a faster response by posting on the prozinc PZI forum.. thats where the PZi guys hang out more. But you are of course more than welcome to stay here .. just an fyi in case you werent aware of the other forum.
