Tim changing from PZI to Lantus

We haven't been able to regulate him recently so the vet is changing him to Lantus. What should I look for? Also,
she is concerned that there is the beginning of kidney failure. Is Wellness too high in protein for him to eat? I am most likely going to change him back to Wellness because he did much better on it. It just got so expensive that we switched.

Thanks for any help.

Chris
