Hi i'm new and referred her by someone on Pet forums. I have taken on a diabetic 3 yr old cat, Tilly. She is completely unregulated and at present she is on insulin detox while I'm switching her to wet food low/no carbs. She has had really high BG readings and no wonder she was on RC diabetic food. She is currently on caninsulin but i will be getting that changed in a couple of days as i know this insulin is no good and whilst on it twice a day with 2 units a go she was still having very high readings.

Any advice is welcome thank you for reading this post. I was going to show everyone a pic of Tilly but not sure if i am allowed to do that here

Welcome!

What do you mean by "insulin detox" ? Did you take her completely off insulin?

There's a lot to learn here and much of it is in the sticky posts at the top of the forums and on the main page.
- home blood glucose testing
- ketone testing - pick up strips from pharmacy
- diet - sounds like you're started on that
- insulin type & injections

And yes, you're allowed to post a photo or two - just watch the size of the attached file, or use something like Photo Bucket and link to it.

Thanks for taking Tilly's care in hand. It sounds like you know what you are doing. I'm completely unqualified to give treatment advice, so I won't.

Yes, certainly pictures of the kitty are allowed here!

Here's how to attach a picture of sweet Tilly: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=486

Yes, a milder longer lasting insulin than Canninsulin would be much better. The most popular insulins here are Lantus, Levemir and ProZinc.

Keep reading and asking questions. The most important thing we do for our diabetic kitties is to test them before every shot (to make sure it is safe to give the shot in the amount we have planned) and mid cycle so we know how the insulin is working. Here is how we do it: Video for hometesting

Read and ask questions. Everyone who answers you is paying it forward for help they received when they were new and overwhelmed.

hi ok well then i will have to add a picture lol

Well i was advised to not give her insulin whilst switching her to carb free food. She has behaved no different as when she is taking it. She will be back on insulin tonight. she was taken off it for one dose i gave it to her last night at 7.30 and she didn't get a morning does but will have her dose tonight (sorry don't know where you are I'm in uk)
I am trying to get her on one of the better insulins but vet wanted me to wait 2 days and if i still want to he will sort that out, i am already testing her at home for BG she has had very high readings so far and will get a bother reading in 45 mins. I need to start testing her urine for ketones.

Thank you for your help

Thank you sorry i posted before i saw your post. i am home testing her BG but need to get some strips for the ketone testing

What a beautiful girl! If you use the aviator directions, she will come up every time you post.

You have gotten all the pieces into place (except maybe the insulin). Wonderful!

We have a great tool to help. We have a color coded spreadsheet to keep track of her numbers. It helps you and us keep track of her numbers and patterns. Some people have had trouble getting it to work. Here are 2 sets of directions: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=50130. Sometimes you can also sign onto Google and search templates for FD spreadsheet and/or FDMB spreadsheet. It is tricky. If you want help, just ask.

lol aviator directions you'll have to help me out on that one not sure what that means. I did try and use her as my avatar but all my pics are above 9kb so :(
Thats great i will have a look at that sheet ah i found it via google. She is very stunning lovely a little moody with my other cats but i think that she is just unhappy cause the poor thing is constantly hungry and dying for carbs, we have locked up all human food in cupboards as a while a go she managed to get into the bread bin and have a feast.

Tilly is BEAUTIFUL! she is so lucky to have you helping her! I'm very new to this~ only 2 weeks since Louie's diagnosis~
Home testing is getting easier each day, as is the transition to low carb wet food from dry food addicted kitties (5 in my household including Louie~ everyone else just had to get with the new program!)
I'm still asking tons of questions~ its still so new~ but the folks here in this community are wonderful life-savers! Sue helped me set up my spread sheet, and now I'm doing what seemed daunting only days ago~
Welcome to you and sweet Tilly!

Thank you Tracy and Louise is that your little devil as your avatar lol.
The owner apparently said she couldn't handle the diabetes so i was glad she could come here rather than go to the cattery no place for a diabetic cat!
i myself have only be dealing with this for a week, i find the injections the easy bit lol. She is quite stubborn on the food front she tends to lick the wet food but doesn't want to chew it and starts scrounging for carbs lol we found her in the bin the other day so now we have to put something heavy on the bin silly kitty. I have no idea how any of you work and look after a FD cat its s o much work lol

I am lucky that I work mostly at home as an artist~ but I do need to leave a couple days a week too to do work outside my home. One wonderful person in this community introduced me to the idea of mixing some hot water with the wet food to extend it and give it a more gravy wet quality that my kitties have been loving. She also told me about mixing up some wet food with water ahead of time, and putting the mixture into cupcake tins to freeze (pre-greased) that can then be left out during the day frozen (described as little "hockey pucks"!) As it thaws, the kitty can feast and gnaw on it. I'm trying that tomorrow for the first time since I'll be gone all afternoon. we do need to have our lives too!
yes! I found that the injection part is the easiest, but I am getting much better and more relaxed with the testing.....big learning curve, but exciting to meet the challenge when you love a kitty!

To get a smaller photo
First, make a copy of the pic you want to use, so you keep the original as is.
Open the copy with a simple graphics editor, such as Paint under Accessories in Microsoft Windows.
Browse around - there is usually a 'Resize' option to shrink or slightly enlarge a picture, as well as a 'Crop' option which lets you trim off portions you don't want to include.
Save, and check the file size of the saved file.
Repeat, if necessary, to get under the 9K limit.

PS to LouiOrangeTabby Love to see some of your artwork, if it is online!

yes well i don't really have a life outside my lot lol i am fostering Tilly and two kittens and have 3 of my own and my flat mate has 2 so we have a very busy cat house lol don't worry I'm not one of those hoarders hehe

There is definitely a learning curve we are getting some diabetic friendly cat treats for her to make BG testing less painful she is at such an early stage i think cause all she cares about is eating and she likes to sit outside the kitchen waiting.

Now I'm not sure if this is just Tilly or diabetic cats in the beginning but she gets quite moody?

Tracy,

When are you going to paint a picture of Louie? If could paint or draw I would have some pictures of the kitties.

Maybe Louie's diabetes is an opportunity for me to consider painting a portrait of him! ;-)

Tracy,

Life is short and the very least you should have a beautiful portrait of Louie. If you paint it please do post here to the board a picture for us to see. We love kitty pictures.

She is a lynx point Siamese mix. She came from a rescue shelter here where I live. Thank You very much I think she is beautiful. I got her and her sister who was tiger(GA) Ally at 8 weeks old. I had no idea she would turn out so pretty, she was almost all white as a kitten. Her name is Lilly.

Terri

awww Lilly she is stunning and a rescue so thats great!
LOL ragdolls are like that white then as they get older they start to form colours. One of mine is a ragdoll well supposed to be but has not developed her coat year but she is still getting her colours she is a tortie

Tasha

If you can figure out how you should attach pictures of the kitties to one of your posts. I could never figure out how to do it. Some people put videos of their kitties at the end of their post and pictures. I just love looking at them.

Terri

omg so happy first day of insulin according to her readings and no dry food and she has gone from having horribly high readings yesterday of 33 which would be over 500 for you lot and now she was 23 before insulin and 20.1 after

Thankyou Terri she is such a cutie and very lovely and floppy lol
i have two ragdoll crosses as well I'm a sucker for the cats lol

awwww you'll have to show me some pictures i actually found this side through Claire at Pet forums and if your cat crazy you should go there much fun lol obviously its secondary to here

all you need to do is click on the either direct link or html link if you want them to go on your post click on image code

The tuxedo is almost 14, the gray one is ? he is the oldest the vet thinks, found him outside at my old house half dead and he was feral, Lilly my Siamese mix is almost 13 and Lucy the evil little one is 1 and half.

are bless so Lucy is the ickle baby of them. So sweet the Black and white one is big isn't he lol My grey one is like that not as heavy but getting there and he is half russian blue so he is meant to have a slender figure

Andy the black and white I nickname Bubba cause he is so big. How is Tilly doing? What time is it in the UK? You need to get her most definitely on another type on insulin. How is she doing with her testing? Are you giving her two shots a day?

Well yes i am seeing the vet on Thursday and getting him to change it, its 00:38 at the moment luckily i don't sleep much lol I'm doing readings every two hors today so i can see how long it stays in her system.

Well I'm very happy i got it down a bit thanks to the food, she really doesn't like the testing and she seems to be moody a lot of the time and the cats are getting it from her she smacked one to get her off the chair so she could sit there :o

We are giving her shots in the morning and then 12 hours later but I'm sure that is gone in her system by 7 hours. Not sure what i can switch to here though the british system is backwards they don't like to spend much money on animal care. What is your diabetic on

Mine is on Lantus. It is one of the best normally for cats. It stays in the system for 12 hours. Required 1 shot every 12 hours. I think the insulin Tilly is on is mainly for dogs hence caninsulin(canine).
My cat does not like the testing or the shots but it has to be done. I don`t test as often as I should but I still do.
When you go to the vet you must get her on a different insulin. Lantus is expensive but cats are known to go into remission on it. There is also Levemir and Prozinc, but I am not sure what would be available in the UK.

Exactly its weird over here and he said to me he would change it if i wasn't happy so I'm calling tomorrow and asking for one of the ones you mentioned. The rescue pay for her treatment at the moment so not so worried aout that. Im staying up tonight to test every two hours but to be honest she is quite moody all the time at the moment cat(2)_steam which I'm hoping is the diabetes. I read about the caninsulin when i took her in spoke to the vet about it and he wanted me to give it a couple of days cause on some cats it works but they are idiots at times tbh they don't like to change things over here but i will be demanding it tomorrow.

Ahhh from research i have just found out that lantus is available in the UK so i will be asking for it

She is probably moody because she does not feel good. What are her Bg levels? Mine is moody anyhow I think she does not feel good either. Yes please insist on a different insulin as I said that insulin is mostly for dogs. You can post also on the Lantus board and they can help you with dosing. I don`t post over there much because I dont test as often as they like you to do but they are very good people and they know very well what they are doing with Lantus.
Some of these people cats have been on this insulin for years and they know alot. I have gotten much help from them when I needed it and did not know what to do.

If you are going to be asking for Lantus, make sure the vet writes the scrip for Solostar pens rather than the vial. While the pens are a little more upfront in cost you will be able to use all the insulin in them before it goes bad, whereas the vial you will end up throwing most of it out because it has become ineffective. Bless you for taking in Tilly after her pervious family didn't want to treat her diabetes, I have 2 adopted diabetics because their previous owners wanted them destroyed rather than treat them for being just a little extra sweet. This is on top of 12 non-diabetic furry babies (11 cats and 1 large dog)

wow thats weird i posted something but it disappeared her readings are just under 400 at the moment yesterday they were over 500 but once i got her off the dry it lowered will be asking for lantus tomorrow and hopefully they will have it. I am staying up 24 hours to test her every 2 hours to see how long it lasts in her.

I mentioned having a different insulin when i first took her on but he wanted me to try it for a bit so tomorrow is my limit of patience so i will sort that out

I think a lot of the moodiness is that she loved her dry food and i took it away and the other cats still get to have it away from her of course so she is taking it out on them.

Thank you for the heads up on the pen, how long does it last, i would probably prefer to get the vial as I'm not too good with the bubble thing i had to nurse my cat with tumour a few years ago and it mad me crazy making sure there were no bubbles

Terri, it isn't the pen if you are having trouble with air bubbles it is the syringe more than likely...I have had syringes that are horrible for bubbles, and others that I have no problem with. Or it is your drawing technique

A pen will last with proper handling a couple of months and by then you will have used almost all of the insulin in that pen, plus you get a package of 5 pens for about the same price as one vial which you will end up throwing away most of it at the end of that month to 2 month period of time. So 5 pens will last nearly a year, while the vial a couple of months.

I'm not sure about the rescue that Tilly came from, but most rescues here in the US don't have a huge budget. If that rescue can purchase enough insulin for nearly a year for the same price as insulin for 2months then that extra money can go to saving more animals.

Mel, Maxwell, Musette & The Fur Gang

Well regardless of which is more cost effective i think the idea is juts to get her on another insulin at the moment she is very unhappy and wil not sit anywhere but near the kitchen 24/7 so bit worried that depression is settling in with her
