Tiko---DKA-- Sunday update

**Tiko (formerly known as Chester) is an FD that I rescued last Saturday from my vet; he had been turned in for euthanasia, but my vet called me instead and asked if I could help; previous thread with what his last week has been like: viewtopic.php?f=28&t=42432 **

Just talked with the ER vet and Tiko is showing some improvement:

Syringe fed last night and he kept it down.
Enema was successful.
BGs staying in the 200's. (going to talk to them about giving 1U instead of 0.5U)
PH level in blood is rising.
Still clearing ketones via urine.
Potassium has risen from 2.8 to 3.0 (but needs to be at least 3.5; being supplemented with that)
Phosphorus is well below normal, which is most concerning now. (it was 4.2-- ref range 3.0-7.0-- on Friday; have to ask why it's lowered so much now)

He ate a bit on his own this morning and they're going to feed him every 2 hours to see if that will help the phos levels. They can do an IV infusion for the phos but he said it can be tricky and would like to see if eating improves it enough.

Tiko is very weak and leans up against the side of the cage when he tries to sit, but he said he appears more comfortable and is more alert. We're going to go see him in a little bit and give him lotsa loving. cat_pet_icon

Re: Tiko (DKA)-- Sunday update

Awesome update Carolynn!

Pats for Tiko and tell him he has a huge massive cheering section, all pulling for him and sending lots of prayers, good wishes, and positive energy.

Re: Tiko (DKA)-- Sunday update

I have been thinking about dear Chester all day yesterday and this morning.

Thank you for the update, so I didn't have to pester you !

Chester, you are doing better....keep up the good work and exert your will to live.

Still praying for Chester/Tiko (sorry, he just looks like a Chester to me).

Can you take in one of your T-shirts...for your smell. Even though he has not been
with you that long, he might understand that your smell means love.

Re: Tiko (DKA)-- Sunday update

Carolynn, thank you for the update, so many people are pulling for this brave and handsome little man.

Venita and I are actively working on applications to try to get funds from other organizatons to help with Tiko's care and we have also put together a ChipIn page, please share this with as many folks as you can:

Also this morning's update on DCIN's FB page:
"Tiko's morning update from a vet tech at the ER: Tiko hadn't eaten overnight, but just had a big breakfast. His glucose has remained high (no numbers given) during the night. He likely will receive another enema today She questioned his age of 6, saying it looked like a very hard 6, with muscle wasting. She said he is "the sweetest little boy."

Re: Tiko (DKA)-- Sunday update

Scared myself because the first thing I saw was (DKA) and usually you only see that form for a GA. A second later I read DKA but......thanks for the update and sending many prayers for Tiko. Actually it all sounds better than it was and I like the fact that his blood pH is going up too. Has anyone even tried to guess what set this all off?

Re: Tiko (DKA)-- Sunday update

Such great news that he is starting to feel better, I have been sending my very best thoughts his way and am thrilled to see an improvement.

Hugs to your beautiful boy!!

Re: Tiko (DKA)-- Sunday update

I was really afraid to look here this am.......but I'm glad I did. All in all it sounds like he is doing much better. Keep eating and fighting this Tiko....so many people are praying for you!

From my conversation with the vet last night:

...steroids, lack of adequate pain meds [after his dental], and constipation caused stress which led Tiko into acidosis.

My personal thanks to all who have donated and all who have prayed/sent well wishes. We have so far received about $333 against the estimate of $1,900 to $2,500. Although we are contacting other organizations for help, some of them require that all things be in place before Tiko is released, which I am hoping will be tomorrow morning.

Sammy & Mimi...the Canadian Kitties

Sammy & Mimi...the Canadian Kitties have sent me a message challenging you to make a donation to Tiko's fund. They will match your donations with a 10% donation. If you donate $10, they will donate $1; if you donate $25, they will donate $2.50; if you donate $50, they will donate $5.

Sammy and Mimi are dear friends of mine who have helped out with other fundraisers. They are so sad that Tiko is sick, and concerned that their MommaBean is so upset by this situation.

I did not sleep well at all last night. My heart is heavy and I tossed and turned thinking about Tiko. That handsome boy has finally found a home where he'll be truly loved, and now this.

They didn't say so, but I think this might be part of the Canadian Kitties' Mother's Day present, to help their Mom feel better.

So please, rally to Sammy and Mimi's challenge, and help DCIN earn this matching donation.

Re: Tiko (DKA)-- Sunday update

He still looks pretty rough, but I do see an improvement over yesterday... and he rolled over for belly rubs and gave a quiet purr. I should have the latest lab results in just a few minutes.

Please continue your prayers and hopes for this little guy... and send "eat" vibes to him, too! Thank you all so much.

Oh, my, Tiko. You look like crap. You were so bright and shiny when Carolynn took you home, and I know I will see that sparkly Tiko again.

Just sobbed for Tiko; he looks like 2 of my GA's. I'm sending distant reiki to him via Merlin (one handed to type  ) as we speak.

Just spoke with the overnight ER vet and he said Tiko is perkier: wagging his tail and looking around. He's still being syringe fed every 2 hours, but everything is staying down. His phos levels are coming up, which help to make him feel better and indicate the DKA is improving a bit.

Tiko was down to 9.3 lbs from 11 pounds on Monday... but has put back on 1/2 lb with the feedings and hydration.

They will recheck labs at 2am and I'll be picking him up before 8am to transfer him to my vet's for the day.

Thumbs up for tail wagging, improving phosphorus levels, and regaining weight!! Looking forward to the morning report.

DCIN has raised $889 for $2,500 of Tiko's ER vet bill. Thank you all for your donations and for your prayers.

DCIN is putting a moratorium on actively soliciting donations for Tiko. An anonymous supporter is lending DCIN the remaining $1,612 that it needs to pay this bill. 25% of future unrestricted donations and future donations to Tiko will go repaying the loan until it is taken care of.
