Tiki Cat - 0 Carbs Causing High BG

Hi there,
My fur baby has diabetes and we’ve been struggling with her diet and insulin dose for 6 months. 2 days ago we started her on Tiki Cat Luau- ahi tuna and mackerel- which is 0 carbs and should be diabetic friendly. Unfortunately, her BG increased and is higher than what we were getting with FF classic pates (using only pates with 5%-7% carbs). I’m confused- why should 0 carb wet food be causing higher BG and less control? Has anyone else experienced this? (She’s currently on 1.25 units and we thought to lower her numbers through diet before upping the insulin.) Thank you in advance for sharing any thoughts!

That is weird. It doesn't look like they changed their recipes or anything, it still looks like 0% carb. Could be a coincidence.
Did anything else change?
How big a difference is their in her BG? How often do you test? Maybe the change did cause her bg to go lower and she is bouncing.

Hi and welcome to the forum.
I agree that your kitty may be bouncing today from maybe dropping lower yesterday.
How often do you test?
Bouncing happens when the BG drops too fast, too low or lower than your kitty is used to. The body panics and dumps stored glucose and regulatory hormones into the system and this causes the BG to go high. Bounces can last from 1 to 6 cycles.
Do you have a spreadsheet or do you keep a track of all the BGs?
Maybe you might like to set up our spreadsheet and add a couple of weeks numbers so we can help you.
HELP US HELP YOU has a link to our spreadsheet and the signature as well as the hypo kits.
If you could set up the signature…only takes 2 minutes…and tell us about your kitty…what insulin you use, the dose, what type of meter, what you feed, any other illnesses or medications, that would be very helpful.

Thank you both for the quick replies and the welcome. To answer your questions-
Nothing else has changed.
With FF, we were averaging 300, but saw 200-250 BG for 3-4 hours at a stretch;
On 2/8, after a full can of Tiki in the morning, she was at 400. (BG dropped in evening after her dinner of FF to 250);
On 2/9, after 1/2 can of Tiki in the morning, she was at 350. (Again, BG dropped in the evening after dinner of FF to 200);
She is on Lantus and gets 1.25 units in the morning and evening. Vet recommended the Libre sensor to try to get control since we’ve been struggling for the past 6 months. I hear you on the bounces but her range was pretty tight at 325-400 on 2/8 and 300-350 on 2/9 (until evening when switched to FF)

And thank you for the link. I’ll set up the signature.

Yes! Super helpful! Thank you, Wendy&Neko. That seems to describe my Holly exactly. I was beginning to think I was going crazy so good to know I’m not the only one with this experience.
