To start I am sorry I haven't posted in a while. There is just so much to tell and then all of a sudden you get behind and don't know where to begin.

Tigger's spreadsheet is up to date and pretty much tells it all.

I have to say we haven't been following the rules as far as dosing for some time.

Long story short, we took him into the vet because he was pawing at his mouth. The vet tried as best he could to look, but said he had seen worse. So he did senior bloodwork and a thyroid test....turns out nothing that unusual. Glucose levels were good.

Two weeks later I noticed him pawing at his mouth more and more and there seemed to be something 'gunky' hanging from his mouth. No way to describe it better.

It was Labor Day Weekend so called my vet on Sunday and thankfully he was the one on call. He has been treating Tigger for over eight years and knows him well. They have a love/hate relationship. :) He said bring him in early Tuesday and he would have a look. Not to feed him just in case and no insulin (Tigger's #'s weren't that bad anyway - which was strange).

So we took him in early AM. Dr. Kevin called me back a few hours later and said he took out eight teeth. I was shocked!! He and his wife, who is also a vet, both worked on him along with the vet tech. He said there were FORLS but he felt they got it all and no gingivitis. They did not do x-rays since they don't have that equipment.

Would I do it over if I knew they didn't have x-ray equipment to look at these FORLS? I don't know, maybe, but the last part is the amazing part.

They gave him a short term antibiotic at the time of the extractions, but sent me home with Amoxicilian. We already had Torb for pain but he was so sore I could not even give that to him, let alone the Amoxi.

So I hoped for the best and prayed he wasn't in too much pain. Crap, I know he probably was, but I just could not put him through that.

Anyway, he was fine after a few days and more like himself. He seemed to have some tenderness a week or so later, but with pureed food he got through that.

No antibiotics. We probably lucked out. I don't know....I kept thinking about what Dr. Lisa said about unnecessary AB's with dentals and hoped it applied here as well, even with the extractions. Well, it did. So far so good.........no infections, no antibiotics. He is doing well. We are still giving raw food as usual and pureed chicken or baby food.

He feels good and runs around. For all his sixteen years, I have my kitty back. :)

Thanks Marcy for checking in on us.

Glad to hear that he is back to himself now. His eating is good?

8 extractions is a lot. I had a kitty that needed that many - and they didn't even offer pain meds. This was a long time ago, before "they" thought animals felt pain, or something stupid like that. I believe now that she also had Feline odontoclastic resorptive lesions (FORLs). So does my Leanne, who had 4 extractions at age 1-1/2 after losing a tooth. I had her in this week and she needs at least one more tooth extracted. (she is 3-1/2 now).

I wonder what it is that caused these things. I mean, I know its bacteria, but in the wild would these cats have this problem? Seems like there is something in their food that caused this, or something missing that would prevent this. They don't chew and gnaw on muscles, tendons and bones as indoor cats. Maybe that is the problem?

I think that is exactly right Sheila. Being able to gnaw on their prey would probably do the trick as far as teeth cleaning. :)

Welcome back, Pamela!

I was thinking about you a couple of weeks ago and checked out your spreadsheet. I saw the dental and I saw the drop in insulin that Tigger is getting. I was going to PM you but my plate has been kind of full and I did not get around to it. Glad Marcy did.

I wonder if Tigger's mouth could have been affecting his insulin requirements for years? From a high of 4 units of Lev earlier this year down to 0.5 units now. Wouldn't it be remarkable if a cat that has been diabetic for 8 years were to go into remission!!!

I am very glad you are back. I am still fighting allergies. I am out of town right now, but when I get back home, I will post and I'm looking forward to any suggestions you might have.

Hi Lana, thank you for thinking of us. :)

Tigger had a dental in the spring of '07 and the vet has checked his teeth periodically since then and said they seemed fine.

Two weeks before this dental, the vet looked at his teeth (as much as Tigger would let him) and said he saw some tarter buildup but that he had seen worse. Then the emergency eight extractions two weeks later. :(

There have been times since we switched to Levemir in Jan. of '09 that Tigger had all blues and greens on lower and on higher doses. Then he would start getting some yellow's and I would just slowly raise the dose again, then he would get better numbers and I would lower it again.

I don't think there is ever a possibility that he will go off insulin, but thank you for the optimism! :)

So Yoyo is fighting allergies from fleas again? Are you finding any on him?

Will look forward to your update. :)
