Tigger just went hypo!!! I'm still shaking

He's so hungry now, at about +5. He had 1 1/2 cans of the high carb food this morning. Do I dare feed him now or do I wait till his dinnertime? The feeding still confuses me.
 
Unless there's a reason besides his diabetes for withholding food, feed the starving boy. Many people free-feed except for the last couple of hours before shot time. The reason for that is to be sure you get a good 'body only' read for safety rather than something food influenced.

As mad, upset, angry and pissed off that you are. I must stick up for your husband. It could have been worse. He could have given the shot.

My hubby will not test and wants no part of that step. He would have given his food and shot.

Maybe talking out a routine or cheat sheet and tape some where for will help. But I think you were lucky much worse could have happened.
 
I am so sorry you had to go through that scare this morning, it scared me last night when you said your vet said you would see visible symptoms, I got a good scare the other morning when I tested Scotty and he was 37, I always test him at AMPS and PMPS but had gotten a little lax about testing in between, that 37 sure slapped me out of it. I think a lot of vets think that pet owners will just quit treating their pets if they have to test often or it will cause a rift between the pet and owner so they advise against testing so much but it really is necessary.
 
Oh, I've learned my lesson..trust me! I can't wait to tell the vet next time I'm there that there were NO clinical symptoms when he got that 37! And also, yes it could have been much worse had my husband given the shot. Thank goodness he didn't..and I didn't! He knew to test though, and that was the key. Anyway, I now have a taped "cheat sheet" on the inside of the pantry door where his food is! :) It will help me too. Nancy..what did you do when your cat tested at 37?

My BF won't shoot or test either but he is good moral support:rolleyes:
Says he would test but hast in 6 months:confused:
 
Thanks Jayla! I am feeling a lot better. Tiggers numbers were good today, so I'm feeling positive. Thank you! And hubby and I have discussed things..I put a chart up for both of us! He's good at testing and giving shots.mi shouldn't complain I just panicked this morning, especially since the DKA episode and the $4,000 we just spent on that is still fresh in my mind.

Based on my own experience and the experiences others have shared here I think a lot of vets haven't a clue about the difference between a cat being tested by its loved and trusted person at home vs. being tested by a stranger at a vet's office - and possibly a very cack-handed stranger to boot. For most cats the difference is like night and day; the latter experience most likely being stressful for the cat whereas the former can be a wonderful bonding opportunity.

It really annoys me that so many vets appear to assume that because they have difficulty testing cats without stressing them out that it automatically implies it's impossible for anyone to test a cat without stressing it out instead of questioning their own testing technique - even when presented with a raft of evidence that disproves their flawed hypothesis. Arrogance much?

So sorry to take so long to get back to you, since Scotty is a high dose cat and it was time for his next shot I just fed him some high carb food and skipped his next shot, then tested him a couple more times, with the high carb food as usual he came up fast but I do not recommend that you do that, I know how Scotty reacts to food and insulin but you did the right thing in giving him the pancake syrup and doing everything just like you did. I have dropped Scotty's insulin from 4.25 to 4.00 and I am keeping a closer watch on him, maybe a miracle will occur and I will get him into remission again, but I think you did everything just right to treat your cat dropping that low even to the freaking out, the first couple of times Scotty went low I was a wreck. Don't worry you did great.
