Just picked up Tiger from vet for a full day Bg curve. Numbers came back as
+2 - 346
+4 - 321
+6 - 346
+8 - 296
+10 - 341
Vet wants me to go from 1 unit insulin to 2 units starting tonight. I'm very nervous about this but know his numbers are too high.

Is it okay to jump from 1 to 2 units so quickly?

Not sure if matters but he is 13.2 lbs (up 1/2 lb fr diagnoses )

A 1u increase is too much all at once. With Lantus you increase by 0.25u at a time unless your cat goes over 5u (in which case you would increase by 0.5u at a time). It does look as though Tiger needs more insulin, but if you increase by 0.25u and hold that dose for 6 cycles and then see what his nadir looks like before deciding whether or not to increase again. Increasing in small amounts means that you don't run the risk of accidentally skipping over his ideal dose.

Thats what I was thinking too...I like the idea of .25u increase to monitor him on. I will try tonight and test him later.

How long after shot/food should I test?

We usually like to get a +2 test as often as possible as that can often give a good idea of where he's likely to go during the cycle when you compare it to the pre-shot number. Usually we start with that and then we can get a good idea of when to test next. :)

You should always test before shooting...we call that the Pre-shot test......then get at least a mid-cycle test on the AM cycle and at least a "before bed" test on the PM cycle

We also want you to get those pre-shot tests when they haven't had food for the prior 2 hours so the number isn't food influenced. After the PS test, it's not as important when they've had food

If you can get more tests in, that's even better because it'll help fill in the picture on how Tiger is doing.

It'll REALLY help if you'll start using our spreadsheet to keep track of his numbers too. Here's some instructions on How to create a spreadsheet. Our spreadsheet is every bit as valuable a tool as a good insulin and low carb food is. If you think of it like a puzzle, the more pieces you have filled in, the easier it is to see the whole picture. ( China's spreadsheet link is in our signature...You can see what I mean)

It'd also be great if you'd go ahead and fill out the information for your Signature box...As you can see below here, if someone wants to know about China, all that information is already listed so we don't have to keep asking the same questions over and over again

If you need help with either the spreadsheet or signature box, just ask!
