Just in case anyone is on...Her AMPS is 170 I'm waiting 20 mins to be sure it's rising but then what the heck do I shoot? Recap of last night:

PMPS 270 then 276 20 mins later
shot .6
+4 - 92 30 mins later 89
+5.5 - 88
+6 - 88
+ 7 - 91

Sorry Barbara,
I wish I could help you here, but I am lost myself
It is so frustrating when you dont know what to shoot
hang in there!

Thanks Denise! I know you're having a hard time too! Just moral support is good.

I went ahead & shot .4.....can't really say why....mostly just a guess & now I'm thinking I should have done .5?

I'm very FRUSTRATED at the vet right now....of course the one I like the best wasn't there so my 2nd choice was there. She won't be my choice from now on with diabetes problems....I think I might know more than her! BIG WASTE OF MY TIME!!!! She said she didn't smell anything on her breath & she was not dehyrated & with the #'s I got last night she doesn't think it's a problem...then went on to say the 200 #'s I've been getting are probably where I want to be??? I told her I don't have a problem with the dosing...I can handle it (I lied!! LOL) but I was just concerned with the ketones. She says they test the same way that I do? And of course Thumper's bladder was not full. I asked about a blood test (twice) and she said "No, we just test the urine" and I could leave her to see if she would pee....I declined! Oh, and she said the human glucometers don't read right for pets.....too bad I had her test with thiers & mine...guess what..mine was 10 points higher than theirs! I don't think you can complaine about that! Thumper's BG was 303...at +1 I was getting upset about that but then I remembered the stress factor. She's back home & I'm going home @ lunch to check on her. I'm upset about the vet....I've been going there 15 years, longer than this vet has been there. My favorite I found out this morning never works on Mon & Tues but really I don't know how much she knows about diabetes. She is the one who encouraged me to home test & do some research though. Thank goodness for that cause that's how I made my way here! I think I'm done ranting now.

BTW, I need to find out how other vets have tested for ketones. Should I post on health?

It is discouraging when you know more than the vet, but maybe the vet who works later in the week will appreciate your success and be willing to learn. Good job on the dose. Yes, I would post on Health about ketones. Fortunately, ketones has not been one of our issues. I would keep testing at home for awhile - now you know what a trace looks like, you should be able to spot any change more easily.

Just be glad you DO know more than the vet and let's celebrate how well Thumper is doing! Those numbers last night were wonderful.

Hi Barbara!

The only I reason I continue to chime in on the Ketone issue, is due to Kitty's DKA. I don't have a lot of experience with ketones, but unfortunately I have more than I would like.

My Vets check the urine for Ketones. I use two different vets and one stimulates the bladder to make Kitty urinate and the other takes the unrine from her bladder by needle. Neither of my vets use blood test--not to say that is not a testing method, just not how mine test. When Kitty was in DKA her initial reading for ketones was 50.

Nancy and Payne have had 3 or 4 episodes of DKA and she is well versed on Ketones. In one of her threads, I read that Payne had Ketones and DKA when her bgs were in the 280 range. If you post regarding ketones on health you will get replies, but hopefully Thumper is okay.

I am glad about her #'s from last night but now a little concerned she will go back up again. This morning before her shot she went up 39 points in 20 minutes, then she was so high at the vet but I know some of that is stress. I hope the stress doesn't cause up to loose ground either!

One more thing--one vet does use the dipstick--just like you use at home. The other has an "in house" lab that reads the urine.

Thanks Kim, that's good to know. I know they got urine from her before, I just don't know how they did it. I asked & she said her bladder was really small & they couldn't even "stretch" her out & manually get anything. That's when she talked about waiting a while & trying again & I said no, I didn't want to leave her.

awww Barbara, I'm glad you did'nt leave her.
I think you gave a nice dose this morning.
And I think your getting some nice numbers and I don't think kitty has ketones. it is IN the urine. and you can't compare a water logged stick with a urine logged stick.
AAAAAAnd,,,know what? I think your Thumper wants to go OTJ.
You are an excellent mommie and if you ask me,,,,,which you didn't, so of course I will answer....you deserve a break, a pat on the shoulder, a HAPPY MOTHERS DAY and a sweet loving purr from your kitty family for taking such awesome care of them.
I wish I could show you how well you and Thumper are doing.
And that small chances are NOT so dangerous....just learning.

Barbara, you must be exhuasted and frayed today with little sleep. but if your in the mood read beachin's thread cause i wrote something on their with you in mind....not ABOUT you...but had you on my mind.
hugs
Lord Thomas,
and Lori too!

I went home to check on her at lunch & her +6.5 is 313....so disappointing. I'm sure it will be higher when it comes time for PM shot. Once again I don't know what to shoot. Lori, I will go read it.

That is disappointing.....But maybe a bounce from her lower than usual numbers last night? I would just stay with your .5 and see what happens.(Assuming we are right and she continues up.)

Ketones are a by product of the body metabolizing fat and are excreted in the urine. The body does this because it is unable to metabolize carbs ( usually due to insufficient insulin or insulin resistance). It is bad for the body to be doing this, is damaging to internal organs. My vet would test by taking urine from her bladder with a needle ( sounds awful but didn't seem to bother her a bit),and then using the ketostix.

I wouldn't worry too much about the vet - sounds about par  . It's how they are trained, and unless they are "special" and have really learned more beyond that, they really just aren't diabetes experts (even the specialist vets aren't in my experience). They are happy with numbers under 300 basically.

I would probably stick with 0.5 for a bit as well. You know you have 0.6 as a BAM dose if you need it!

More ketone info---not that this is important, but Iike to be accurate. The body is unable to metabolize glucose and metabolizes fat instead. This process produces ketones, and when there is an high concentration of ketones in the blood it is very toxic. Ketones can be measured in the blood or the urine. I believe they may appear in the urine first.

PMPS - 365 I shot .4 this am so I guess I need to go back up....should I go to .5 or .6? Last night was .6 and that's when I got the low readings. Was it the insulin or some other freak thing?

Seems like .5 was the vote earlier so that's what I went with....hopefully this will work!

Now to open another bag of worms....I've been thinking about where I'm shooting. I have read somewhere about shooting on the side or something. I was taught to shoot pretty much the area near her shoulders on her back now I'm thinking that's not the best place? Also, she has gotten so she meows at me when I give her shot. For the first few weeks she didn't seem to notice.

well considering she had a vet visit....there is the possibility, that she just is giving you a stressy number.
I hope you get some good sleep tonight. that smaller dose hopefully won't give you anything to stay awake over.

I shoot now in the side near the tummy.
You can shoot shoulders, tummy, sides...just be sure not to go too deep. Like muscle deep.
And moving the shot area around is good.
I heard it's better than always shooting the same place.
When did she start to meow with shot?
and is it a MEOW like 'hey that hurts' meow?

I guess I first noticed a couple of weeks ago....and yes it's like a "that hurts" meow.

Well switch spots by all means.
check her skin to see if there is an irritation from the injection.
and are you sure your doing it right.
long or short needle.
mine is like 1/4 inch long so I just push directly in.
no tenting.
but if you have a longer needle...are you tenting nicely?

Hi Barbara,
I also had that problem with Shakes
Inthe begining I always shot in the scruff but after awhile
he started crying like it hurt so I changed to the side
Once I did that his numbers also changed
He started going lower than before so if you do change be careful!
I now change side to side every couple of weeks and whenever I do I see a change in numbers

I do tent & I'm doing it like I always did. I always separate her fur after the shot looking around to make sure I didn't do a fur shot & I haven't seen anything. I'm using the 1/2 in needle, I didn't think I would do well with the shorter one...too hard to see what's going on. I was just looking for some pics of where to give it in the side, I know I've seen them somewhere!

Yes the drop was from the insulin. I would stick with 0.5 and see what happens. Agreed today could just be stress, don't put a lot of weight on today. If you don't get better numbers of 0.5 in a couple days then go back to 0.6, but 0.6 looked possibly a little bit strong - maybe not, but I'd try 0.5 first.

I like giving shots sort of a couple inches behind the shoulder blade and a couple inches away from the spine - so on the side, but not down by their stomach or anything. I don't really tent, just pull up a flap of skin, like a mini-tent. Of course that is short needles, but I had to give my civie a couple shots with longer needles and the same technique seemed to work ok. I found my civie reacted a bit to shots with bigger needles, but didn't seem to notice with smaller needles.

+3 - 233

That's all I'm getting for tonight. I have to go to bed. I-) Guess I'm sticking with .5 for AM also. Hopefully we will get back down tomorrow!
