we changed fish’s diet almost immediately after being able to test. i noticed he was throwing up the fish type food we had gotten, so we switched to chicken, yet he’s still throwing up sometime in the night. everyone is asleep when he does, and no one’s really seen him, but i’m assuming it’s him and not the other cats since he’s the only one on a food they haven’t had before. i mix his zero carb food with half of a high carb, since i was nervous to drop him to zero immediately. he used to have access to dry food regularly. i don’t know if there’s something i can or should do to help him?

If you're using the Young Again Zero Carb, it can be a bit too rich for some cats. You may need to make a slower transition. Either way, try a slower transition. A food change can throw a cat's GI track off.

we stopped dry food all together, so he’s just getting wet food now. how do i backtrack the transition know? i’m just not really sure how to go about this

Whatever he was eating before and not having any problems is your baseline food. Even if it's a matter of substituting a teaspoon of the new food for a teaspoon of the old food, that's how you would switch from the old to the new food. Dr. Lisa has information on her feline nutrition page about transitioning from dry to canned food. It's a helpful read about switching regardless of what kind of food it is.

hi! i just wanted to come back to say it’s been resolved.
unrelated, fish has been getting VERY upset when i try to prick his ears the last two or three days, which is so incredibly unlike him. it makes it difficult to actually prick him at all to try to test, im not sure what to do, since nothing has changed from before he started acting like this.

Hi Ember can you fill in the doses you gave for the night cycle on 10-25 and the doses for 10-26 and this morning 10-27
I'm no expert on doses but it does look like Fish could use an increase, looks like you're holding the dose too long
Tagging Suzanne for you since she's familiar with Vetsulin

I'm sure you saw this already
Always aim for the sweet spot warm the ears up first, you can put rice in a sock and put it in the microwave, test it on the inside of your wrist to be sure it's not to hot, like you would test a babies bottle. You can fill a pill bottle with warm water and roll it on the ears also.Just keep rubbing the ears with your fingers to warm them up

6. As the ears get used to bleeding and grow more capilares, it gets easier to get the amount of blood you need on the first try. If he won’t stand still, you can get the blood onto a clean finger nail and test from there.
When you do get some blood you can try milking the ear.
Get you finger and gently push up toward the blood , more will appear
You will put the cotton round behind his ear in case you poke your finger, after you are done testing you will fold the cotton round over his ear to stop the bleeding , press gently for about 20 seconds until it stops
Get 26 or 28 gauge lancets
A lot of us use the lancets to test freehand
I find it better to see where I'm aiming
You can also put a thin layer of vaseline on the ear ,to help the blood bead up
If you look at the lancet under a light you will see one side of the lancet is curved upward, that's the side you want to poke with. I have always free handed. On the lancets I don't have to keep looking for the side that's curved because on theplastic on the lancet there are little holes if you want to call it that, the side on my lancets with the part that's curved upward had smaller holes on it, so when I poke I just look at the lancet for them and poke

Are you checking urine for ketones? The bg is staying quite high so I would test daily. I used the very sharp terumo 25 gauge needles to test nit because Max was difficult but because it’s what my vet preferred. Well, he did not use terumo but did use needles. I always got enough blood and Max did not even flinch.

I think this is previous post.

Any chance you could switch to a more cat appropriate insulin like Prozinc or Lantus?
