After reading a few post, I am still feeling overwhelmed on trying to figure out how much food to give my cat. He is 14 lbs and the vet wants him down to 12 lbs. I feed him Blue Buffalo Wilderness High Protein, Low Carb. It is a 3 oz can. How many cans of food should I feed him per day? I currently feed him 3 cans a day. He is on Lantus 2 units 2x a day. Also, is there an alternative to the kind of food I am feeding him that is natural and doesn't cost as much. I have feed him Friskies Pate and Fancy Feast Classic in the past but I wanted something that has more natural ingredients in it.

Weigh him frequently. If gaining or staying the same reduce the amount but not by much. Each cat is different so there is not magic number of calories/pound

This is a process, not an event. You want slow, steady weight loss.

Too sudden weight loss may result in fat overwhelming the liver and causing hepatic lipidosis.

How recently was he diagnosed with diabetes and is he regulated? Often, newly diagnosed kitties will be ravenous until they're regulated partially due to their body not being able to process nutrients from food properly. From the same site that provided the food list from Wendy&Tiggy above, there is a page that deals specifically with feline obesity that might be of help to you.
